About The Department The Information Technology Services Department is responsible for enterprise technology operations for the City of Alexandria. ITS provides technology services and solutions to City departments to enhance service delivery. ITS aligns its work with City needs by providing leadership, resources, expertise, and products that enable departments to better serve the Citys residents, businesses, and visitors. ITS resources support initiatives funded through the multi-year Information Technology Capital Improvement Plan (IT/CIP) to improve the overall technology landscape. The City of Alexandrias ITS Department has been a Top Ten National Finalist in the Digital Cities Award program for over the past 19 years.

An Overview The Department of Information Technology Services (ITS) is seeking a GIS Analyst I. This person will work in the Emerging Technology and Advanced Analytics (ETAA) Division and will support the Citys GIS program. This GIS staff position will focus on ensuring the Citys most complex and important spatial data sets (e.g., streets, vehicle routing, and address data) are of the highest accuracy. They will collaborate with the GIS team and other Citywide stakeholders to address data and mapping needs, including assessing data requirements, creating data sets, performing quality control, maintaining metadata documentation, and developing mapping and visualization products. This role is critical in ensuring City services relying on GIS, such as public safety, have high-confidence GIS data.

What You Should Bring Candidates should demonstrate the ability to work independently and maintain effective relationships with colleagues, other departments, agencies, and the public. Clear verbal and written communication skills are essential. Candidates should proactively seek to improve their technical and functional skills through training and self-study. Ideal candidates will have experience with ESRI Enterprise, particularly ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro, supporting local government processes, and familiarity with GIS street centerline, address, and vehicle routing data. Innovative ideas for utilizing GIS to solve problems and improve processes are highly valued.

The Opportunity Duties As a GIS Analyst I, your focus will be on maximizing GIS value to support diverse city services and core GIS functions. Key duties include: Editing GIS layers with new data or updating existing assets. Georeferencing and organizing plats, plans, and engineering drawings. Developing and managing spatial data sets, including data modeling and geodatabase schema development. Participating in quality control for base mapping programs. Performing ETL (Extract, Transform, Load) processes for GIS data integration. Automating workflows using Python scripts, ModelBuilder, and FME. Integrating spatial and tabular databases from various agencies. Maintaining accurate GIS documentation, including system design, metadata, services, and processes. Collaborating with GIS team members and City departments to leverage GIS technology effectively. Ensuring security considerations are incorporated into all work. Performing other duties as assigned.

Candidates should possess a four-year college degree in Geography, GIS, Earth Sciences, Urban Planning, Engineering, IT, or related fields, or equivalent experience and training. Additionally, two years of experience with ArcMap/ArcGIS Pro or AGOL is required.
