JOB DESCRIPTION The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Core Tax Services Senior Manager is charged with applying knowledge to understand potential tax issues, recognizing and communicating potential risks and potential changes in tax policy, and making top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Core Tax Services Senior Manager will be a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participate in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise while maintaining client relationships and acting as the primary contact for complex questions. Job Duties
Tax Compliance
Ensures that clients comply with all applicable authorities while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and ensures the firm and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual (TQM). Conducts top-level review of tax returns and resolves tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate
Research
Identifies when research is needed; frames issues clearly and reports the analysis concisely Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research Trains managers/staff on research skills and helps appropriately frame tax issues for analysis Involves firm specialists, as appropriate
ASC 740 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals
Applies Firm policies, standards, and the BDO TQM regarding ASC 740 Reviews tax provisions and prepared workpapers; explains components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions to clients
Tax Consulting
Develops, recommends and implements effective methods to maximize client benefits, including reducing current and future taxes Applies tax knowledge with business/industry insight to recommend solutions Manages client expectations and coordinates with STS specialists as appropriate Monitors implementation of client service plans and handles inquiries from federal/state agencies Provides assistance with protests at the appeals level and implements applicable Firm strategies
Tax Specialization
Develops in-depth understanding of technical and practical issues in tax areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, international, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, etc.) May conduct external CPE training and mentor others in specialization areas
Strategy Development
Develops new or improved ideas to reduce taxes or expenses, researches tax strategies, and presents complex strategies to clients May lead marketing campaigns, if applicable
Other duties as requiredSupervisory Responsibilities
Supervises associates and senior associates on projects Reviews work and provides feedback; trains associates on software tools Acts as a Career Advisor; schedules and manages workload Provides verbal and written performance feedback Education, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred Experience
Eight or more years of relevant tax experience; industry expertise in one or more tax specialties preferred Prior supervisory experience required
License/Certifications
CPA, Attorney (admitted in U.S. jurisdiction), or EA (or equivalent) required; other relevant certifications preferred
Software
Proficient with Microsoft Office; experience with tax research databases and tax compliance software preferred
Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Superior verbal and written communication; ability to delegate effectively Strong analytical, research, and decision-making skills; team-oriented Ability to develop and maintain client relationships and present tax advice
