(BWXT) invites applications for the Data Science Engineer 1 AI Development role in Lynchburg, VA. The Welding Manufacturing Operations group seeks a Data Scientist to manage data, advance AI applications in welding manufacturing, and support data-driven improvements in welding efficiency, quality, and predictive maintenance.
Responsibilities
Data infrastructure and warehousing: design, develop, and maintain data warehouses to store and manage large-scale welding operations data; ensure seamless data integration from sensors, PLCs, and production databases; implement ETL processes for efficient data extraction and processing.
Process monitoring & optimization: develop and deploy real-time monitoring systems to track welding parameters, detect anomalies, and report findings; analyze data to improve weld quality, defect detection, and predictive maintenance; apply statistical models, AI, and ML techniques to enhance process control and automation.
AI and machine learning in welding operations: develop AI-driven solutions to predict weld defects, optimize settings, and improve process consistency; implement computer vision for weld quality inspection and automation; leverage deep learning and reinforcement learning for robotic welding systems.
Data analytics & reporting: create dashboards and visualization tools to provide insights into production efficiency and quality; perform exploratory data analysis and present findings to engineers, production teams, and leadership; assist in root cause analysis by correlating welding data with production outcomes.
Collaboration & continuous improvement: work with welding engineers, automation specialists, and IT teams to enhance manufacturing intelligence; stay updated on AI and data science technologies relevant to industrial welding; provide guidance on data governance, security, and compliance.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics or related field
U.S. citizenship with no dual citizenship
Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance
Technical Skills
Proficiency in Python, R, SQL and big data technologies
Experience with machine learning frameworks (TensorFlow, PyTorch, Scikit-learn) and handling industrial IoT and sensor data
Familiarity with data warehousing tools (e.g., Microsoft SQL Server)
Knowledge of predictive modeling, time-series forecasting, and anomaly detection
Experience with computer vision for industrial applications is a plus; dashboarding with Power BI is a plus; knowledge of REST APIs and web frameworks is a plus; C# is a plus
Industry Knowledge & Experience
Understanding of welding processes, materials, and quality control (preferred but not mandatory)
Experience in manufacturing, automation, or industrial analytics (desirable but not mandatory)
Knowledge of Six Sigma, Lean Manufacturing, or process optimization techniques (a plus)
Soft Skills
Strong problem-solving skills with an analytical mindset
Ability to communicate complex data insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders
Team player with a collaborative approach to interdisciplinary projects
Willingness to learn new tools and strong written, verbal, and interpersonal communication
Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and proactive
Preferred Qualifications
Certifications in data science, AI, or cloud computing (e.g., AWS Certified ML, Google Professional Data Engineer)
Master's degree in Data Science (preferred)
