Director, Counsel – Real Estate at Burlington Stores, Inc.
Overview
As the Director, Counsel – Real Estate, you’ll represent the Company in the acquisition, disposition and leasing of real estate. The role includes familiarity with anchor and/or junior anchor leasing and negotiation of collateral documents such as guaranty, recognition and non-disturbance agreements and estoppels.
Base pay range
$150,000.00/yr - $190,000.00/yr
What you’ll do
- Lead all aspects of negotiation and documentation of shopping center leases for Burlington, including examination and resolution of title and environmental issues, deeds, easements, restrictive covenants, and mortgage/title issues.
- Negotiate and draft anchor and junior anchor leases, subleases, waivers, restrictions, and collateral documents such as guaranty, recognition and non-disturbance agreements, and estoppels.
- Manage real estate deals from letter of intent through lease signing and store opening.
- Coordinate internal and external deal processes, drive continuous improvements and scalability in deal processes and execution; plan and coordinate due diligence; advise senior management on legal risks and practical mitigation plans.
- Partner cross-functionally with other attorneys, outside counsel, government and municipal officials, and internal departments.
Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school; member in good standing of at least one state bar (experience in CA strongly preferred).
- Ability to obtain New Jersey in-house certification if not admitted in New Jersey.
- 5+ years’ experience negotiating and documenting shopping center leases, with emphasis on anchor and junior anchor retail leasing.
- Experience in a large law firm or corporate setting for a major retailer or shopping center REIT preferred.
- Familiarity with various real estate transactions (shopping centers, enclosed malls, urban locations, multi-level properties, strip centers, stand-alone stores).
- High integrity and ability to handle sensitive/confidential information; strong time management, prioritization, and attention to detail; ability to work under pressure and adapt to changing priorities.
- Ability to deliver effective results, meet tight deadlines, and make sound business decisions; strong problem-solving skills and initiative; ability to work independently.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to build partnerships with all levels of management and business partners; excellent written and verbal communications; proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, Outlook, Visio, PowerPoint) and ability to quickly master new systems.
