Responsibilities
The NGS Core Lab Operations Manager will provide the scientific and technical expertise required to expand the IGI's Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) platform and to support all activities related to data generated by our NGS pipeline, from project design, optimization of library prep protocols, and running sequencing instruments, to primary sequencing data analysis and management.
- Provide high quality practical advice to many R&D projects by applying broad NGS-related experimental and data analytics work experience and theoretical knowledge.
- Work on Clinical Phase 1 projects, such as Sickle Cell disease for CIRM (California Institute of Regenerative Medicine).
- Preparing IND (Investigational New Drug) Application for Clinical Phase 2 projects.
Manage the NGS Core samples and library prep
- Oversee all samples are received, inventoried, stored, and processed
- Micro-pipetting, automation handling, creating, and designing detailed tracking systems
- Specialist in NGS with starting material, complex extractions from cells, animal tissues, cell culture, etc.
Oversee and manage the Next Generation Sequencing pipeline
- Design and execute NGS for highly complex CRISPR validation experiments
- Set up and perform complex sequencing experiments using multiple Illumina sequencers
- Post-Sequencing data quality analysis
Inventory, LIMS database, equipment, and operations management
- Manage all NGS Core operations, including instruments preventive maintenance, IQOQ, inventory purchasing and management, etc.
- Building LIMS (Laboratory Information Management Systems) and working with complex sequencing data information systems
Consultation with Principal Investigators, post docs and staff
- Consult with users of the scientific community on bespoke library prep and sequencing reads
Training and managing laboratory personnel
- Optimize, train, and support the IGI Clinical Laboratory COVIDSeq Assay
- Hire, train & develop, and ongoing supervision of team members
- Collaborate with HR to build job descriptions, hire staff, complete annual reviews, and participate in performance management
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- A strong understanding of NGS fundamentals and applications, critical factors influencing data quality, and an ability to troubleshoot the sequencing process end to end.
- Experience with NGS laboratory instrumentation, including liquid handling robots and automation of NGS library prep workflows.
- Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology wet lab skills including DNA extraction and purification, PCR and qPCR, DNA library preparation, QC, etc.
- Experience with genome editing using CRISPR/Cas9.
- Ability to conduct QA/QC experiments including, but not limited to, Agilent Bioanalyzer, Qubit Fluorospectrometer, qPCR.
- Data management, analysis and tracking using LIMS.
- NGS inventory management including sample intake handling and knowledge of Illumina kits/inventory specifications.
- Ability to train others in NGS laboratory techniques and operation.
- Highly organized and has outstanding time/operation management abilities, independence, and ability to manage self.
- Fast learner with a strong sense of urgency, a can-do attitude, and motivational skills to get the best out of team and co-workers. Loves and thrives in a fast paced and demanding academic environment.
- Ability to communicate with peers, Principal Investigators, and all levels of management.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Illumina sequencing platforms (iSeq, MiSeq and NextSeq) and BaseSpace
- Experience with Salesforce LIMS platforms
- At least 5 years of experience with Next Generation Sequencing for highly complex CRISPR experiments
- Experience in academic research environment
- Previous experience with Clinical Phase 1 and Phase 2 trial and IND applications
- Familiarity with UCB standard processes, such as BearBuy, UC Path, and CalTime
- UCSPMC certificate
Education/Training
- MS degree in molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, or a closely related field, with relevant hands-on laboratory experience is preferred.
