We are currently looking for a Controller or CFO for a construction company that is rapidly growing. This position will be in office 5 days a week in Columbia, MD.
Position Summary:
The Controller is responsible for leading our client's financial operations, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and strategic insight to support the company's growth to $100 million in revenue. This position oversees all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, and internal controls, while acting as a key advisor to the President and executive leadership team.
Key Responsibilities: Financial Management & Reporting Oversee all day-to-day accounting operations including A/R, A/P, payroll, job costing, and general ledger. Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP. Develop and maintain accurate job cost accounting. Monitor and maintain company financial risk across organization. Budgeting & Forecasting
Lead the annual budgeting process and rolling forecasts. nalyze actual performance vs. budget and provide variance analysis with recommendations. ssist executive leadership with strategic financial modeling and scenario planning. Cash Flow & Treasury Management
Manage cash flow, banking relationships, and lines of credit. Ensure adequate liquidity for ongoing projects and capital investments. Track receivables and proactively work with project teams to improve collections. Compliance & Controls
Ensure compliance with tax, audit, insurance, and regulatory requirements. Maintain and enforce internal controls to safeguard company assets. Coordinate with external CPA firm for year-end audits and tax filings. Process Improvement & Systems
Evaluate and improve financial systems, processes, and software to support scalability. Provide input for implementation or optimization of ERP or job cost systems. Develop and maintain dashboards and financial KPIs for executive reporting. Leadership & Collaboration
Supervise and develop accounting staff (e.g., bookkeeper, payroll specialist). Partner with operations and project managers to enhance financial understanding across departments. Support HR and executive leadership on compensation and benefit-related financial matters. Other Duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (CPA preferred). 7+ years of accounting experience, preferably in construction or manufacturing. Deep understanding of construction accounting (WIP schedules, job costing, retainage, etc.). Strong proficiency in financial software, Excel, and accounting platforms (e.g., QuickBooks, Sage, or Viewpoint). Excellent communication and leadership skills with a proactive, hands-on approach.
