Principal Consultant, Air Quality - Engineering / Scientist
to join the ERM team in Irvine, CA or Denver, CO. This is a partner-track opportunity for an air quality professional looking to further advance their career with a global environmental leader and to make a significant impact in successfully implementing ERM's global strategy. ERM’s Air Quality Service Area is a recognized leader in the marketplace. Our technical community pursues and wins highly innovative engagements for the most interesting clients, providing the full breadth of air quality and climate change services. In North America, ERM has more than 300 dedicated air quality professionals assisting clients with projects ranging from corporate-level strategic approaches to regulatory drivers, to leading complex capital projects through NSR permitting. ERM is structured to encourage collaboration and networking among regional offices, with opportunities to collaborate with ERM’s national air quality technical team. As a senior leader on this team, you will be fully accountable for selling and consulting for air quality and compliance projects to build a sustainable business locally, while networking with ERM's global Air Quality Technical Team to share best practices. The ideal candidate will be well connected in the regulatory and air permitting community and have established relationships with manufacturing, technology, oil & gas, and/or chemical companies to expand our corporate and facility-level compliance services in California and the Southwest. Responsibilities: Contribute to the development and implementation of a strategic market/business plan, provide leadership, and deliver financial results to expand ERM's Air Quality Service Area and client base, particularly in the manufacturing, technology, oil & gas, and/or chemical sectors. Serve as a key member of the core technical team to drive profitable growth of ERM’s air quality services across North America. Serve as a Senior expert for strategic air permits and compliance programs for a variety of industrial clients with complex technical/regulatory issues. Develop strong client relationships, understand processes, and create permitting and compliance strategies to help clients maintain operating flexibility. Meet client expectations for scope, budget, schedule, and quality. Manage project deliverables, budgets, and schedules as a lead for existing teams. As a seller/doer, contribute to expanding ERM’s air consulting and compliance services annually. Identify and develop new opportunities, prepare effective technical proposals, and lead development of new business with clients. Expand client relationships that generate repeat business. Capitalize on existing client relationships to expand ERM’s profile and market share through technical excellence and cross-selling across service lines. Mentor junior and mid-level staff in planning and execution of air quality projects and in conducting independent technical reviews. Support the growth and development of ERM’s Global Air Quality Services. Collaborate with ERM global practitioners to execute air quality projects with teams across the global organization. Develop a working understanding of ERM’s other consulting service areas and actively support cross-selling these services to existing clients. Requirements: Bachelors in chemical, environmental engineering, mechanical engineering, environmental science or related degree, or equivalent experience. 6+ years of relevant experience. Experience and knowledge of local, state, and federal air regulations. Ability to lead and grow the business in a dynamic market environment. Advanced expertise in air permitting and climate change. Strong track record of managing project deliverables, schedules, and budgets. In-depth understanding of the manufacturing, oil & gas, technology, and chemical industries in California and the companies operating in this sector, including existing relationships for new business. Consistent seller/doer track record, including winning large and strategic projects. Established reputation in the local marketplace with recognized technical expertise in ERM’s service offerings. Ability to build, coach, and mentor collaborative teams. Excellent communication, strategic thinking, negotiation, presentation, and people skills. Positive outlook, collaborative, and driven by ERM’s success. Preferred: 8+ years of solid air quality consulting experience, with expertise in Title V, PSD, NSR, BACT, and MACT. Professional registrations such as P.E., CSP, CHMM, or similar. Familiarity with stack testing and ambient air measurements. Advanced expertise in other environmental compliance areas (e.g., air dispersion modeling, stormwater, Spill Prevention, Control, and Countermeasure Plans, waste, water resources, risk management planning, California Environmental Quality Act permitting, multi-media auditing). Note: For the Principal Consultant, Air Quality - Engineering / Scientist position, we anticipate the annual base pay of $122,612-$166,230 USD. Pay is based on factors including education, qualifications, experience, location, performance, and business needs. Bonuses may apply.
