Overview
Medical Science Liaison - Neuroscience - San Francisco - Remote at Novartis. The MSL is a field-based, customer-facing, non-promotional medical and scientific role. The objective is to advance clinical practice within the assigned territory to improve patient outcomes. The MSL should demonstrate deep therapeutic expertise, understand territory and market influences, engage scientifically with Healthcare Providers (HCPs) and medical experts, manage and develop the territory, and execute activities in alignment with the medical strategic and tactical plan while adhering to Novartis compliance standards. The MSL will inform and shape medical strategy by collecting impactful insights and understanding their strategic impact. Territory & Availability
This territory covers the San Francisco Area. Must live within 50 miles of the territory border to be considered. Relocation is not available. Role Responsibilities
Leverage scientific expertise and market knowledge to establish and build professional relationships with HCPs and other thought leaders in the geographical area aligned with medical strategy. Engage with customers on emerging data, clinical trials, patient journey barriers, market dynamics, unmet medical needs, pipeline discussions, education on disease state and product, adverse event capture, and medical insights across product lifecycle. Demonstrate strategic territory vision and plan Medical Engagements (MEs) and Key Accounts in collaboration with internal colleagues, identifying key stakeholders influencing the patient journey. Identify opportunities for partnerships with academic centers or systems of care to drive impact within the territory. Identify opportunities to involve HCPs or MEs when medical needs are identified (e.g., publications, clinical trial participation). Collaborate with internal stakeholders (HEOR, access, marketing, commercial, sales) to advance clinical practice while maintaining customer centricity and compliance. Maintain in-depth knowledge of the therapeutic area and Novartis compounds to serve as a medical resource for customers and internal colleagues. Understand internal policies and external regulations and how they affect day-to-day responsibilities. Execute administrative responsibilities and training (e.g., Veeva CRM, expense reports, compliance modules) and keep CRM data updated. Champion evolving territory needs and drive personal and professional development. Education & Experience
Education: Graduate degree in science or healthcare required; doctoral degree preferred (MD, PhD, DNP, PharmD, etc). Experience
Experience for Manager Level:
0-3 years in a Field Medical position or as an MSL required, or 3-5 years in medical affairs/clinical research with relevant experience preferred. Experience for AD Level:
Minimum 3 years in a Field Medical-based position or 5-7 years in medical affairs/clinical research with related experience required; prior experience in the therapeutic area preferred. Strong clinical knowledge including pharmacotherapy, treatment guidelines, clinical research processes, medical expert engagement strategies, and FDA regulations; ability to work in compliance with laws and company policies. All Levels Requirements
Field-based role in the San Francisco region; reside within territory or within ~50 miles of the border. Travel is expected (approximately 60-70%); schedule may include domestic/international travel as defined by the hiring manager. Strong ethics, compliance, and promotional policy adherence; commitment to a diverse and inclusive environment. Ability to perform duties in accordance with applicable laws and Novartis policies. Pay ranges at commencement: Manager level $166,400 - $249,600; AD level $183,200 - $274,800. Final pay depends on location, experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities. Total compensation may include sign-on bonuses, RSUs, discretionary awards, and a full benefits package (401(k), PTO, etc.).
