Job Description:

SimIS, Inc. is seeking a Senior Software Architect - Modeling & Simulation SME to lead the technical design and development of NATO's Next Generation M&S capability. This critical role combines advanced software architecture expertise with deep knowledge of military simulation systems to create the future of NATO's warfare simulation infrastructure.

The successful candidate will architect distributed simulation environments that operate seamlessly from strategic planning down to tactical execution, enabling NATO forces to conduct complex multi-domain operations analysis and training. You will be the technical POC who helps transforms operational requirements into scalable, interoperable systems using cutting-edge distributed computing technologies and industry-standard protocols like DIS and HLA.

This position requires a unique blend of technical leadership and domain expertise. You'll design high-level architectures that integrate legacy systems while building next-generation capabilities, ensuring real-time data exchange across global NATO commands. Your work will directly impact NATO's ability to plan, execute, and analyze military operations through advanced simulation technologies.

The candidate performs the following specific assignments:

Design and implement high-level architecture for NATO's next-generation M&S systems

Lead DIS protocol implementation and ensure compliance with IEEE standards

Architect distributed simulation environments supporting multi-location exercises

Develop software components for real-time simulation interaction and data exchange

Create technical specifications for system interfaces and integration points

Design scalable architectures supporting political-to-tactical level simulations

Implement middleware solutions for simulation interoperability

Lead technical reviews of architecture designs and code implementations

Develop APIs for connecting legacy systems (JCTS, JTLS) to new architecture

Optimize network performance for distributed simulation environments

Design data synchronization mechanisms for distributed databases

Create architectural patterns for turn-based and real-time simulation modes

Technical Architecture Focus:

Define enterprise-level M&S architecture standards

Implement publish-subscribe patterns for distributed event handling

Design fault-tolerant systems for mission-critical simulations

Develop microservices architecture for modular simulation components

Create containerized deployment strategies for cloud and on-premise environments

Minimum Experience Requirements within the last 5-10 years:

At least 5 years developing distributed simulation systems using DIS/HLA protocols

At least 3 years designing high-level system architectures for military simulation environments

Proven experience architecting systems that support real-time interaction between multiple simulation nodes

Experience developing APIs and interfaces for simulation interoperability

Strong background in performance optimization for large-scale distributed systems

Experience with both mission-level and campaign-level simulation development

BS in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or related discipline.

Experience Desired:

Experience with NATO STANAG standards for simulation

Knowledge of military C4ISR systems integration

Familiarity with game engines adapted for military simulation

Cloud architecture experience (AWS, Azure)

DevOps and CI/CD pipeline experience

PMP or technical architecture certifications

Special Skills/Knowledge/Training Required/Desired:

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

Excellent written and verbal communication abilities

Expert knowledge of Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS) protocol and High Level Architecture (HLA) standards

Proficiency in multiple programming languages (C++, Java, Python)

Experience with simulation frameworks and middleware

Strong understanding of network protocols and distributed computing

Database design and data architecture experience

Ability to manage multiple projects and priorities simultaneously

Strong attention to detail and technical accuracy
