The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for maintaining instrumentation and equipment, performing quality control and proficiency testing, and testing clinical samples. Analyzes samples for acceptability, and results for accuracy and precision. Accurately performs documentation and reports results to appropriate authorities. This is an on-call position. Job Duties:
Follow established laboratory procedures authorized by the Laboratory Director for all aspects of the testing process to include pre-analytical, analytical, and post analytical functions. Performs only those tests that are within current licensure that are authorized by the Laboratory Director, Laboratory Manager, and requested by licensed clinicians authorized to order diagnostic testing in the State of Oregon. Correctly identifies and labels patient samples. Performs and verifies laboratory tests accurately, reporting within specified turnaround times, and provides accurate and timely delivery of results to clinicians and patients. Records test results accurately into the Laboratory Information System. Monitor quality of and trouble shoot potential problems with laboratory instruments. Maintains analyzers and equipment by performing regular maintenance procedures. Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance activities daily to ensure accuracy of testing platforms and systems. Maintains inventory supply quantities, performs inventory counts, organizes, tracks and logs all inventory supply information. Run and evaluate quality control specimens on all assays and procedures as required, troubleshooting if necessary. Assist in the evaluation of the new assay procedures. Conduct inventory of lab supplies, replenish supplies and discard containers. Maintain a clean work area and dispose of bio-hazardous waste properly. Prepare specimens for transfer; tracks missing reference lab results; receives and processes incoming samples to be distributed for internal or external laboratories. Performs computer test data entry and retrieval; accessions specimens, enters results, retrieves information. Act as a Technical Resource: resolves problems and answers technical/clinical questions for other central lab staff and clinic site labs. Serves as a frontline resource to the laboratory's customers and internal clients. Documents errors and non-conformities in systems and via telephone to providers office. Maintains logs and records, and compile statistics for control data. Answers phones and notify proper personnel regarding unexpected or action limit test results. Document corrective actions taken when test systems deviate from the lab's established performance ranges. Ensures reagents/test kits have been received, open, and expiration dates labeled. Qualifications:
Bachelor's Degree in Clinical Laboratory Science or related science or the equivalent combination of classroom training and/or work experience required; AND Certified Medical Laboratory Scientist, ASCP, or equivalent certification required; AND Three (3) years of experience as a medical lab scientist, preferred. Experience with Orchard Harvest software, preferred. Experience in evaluating acceptability of control data using Levy Jennings and Westgard rules, preferred.
