Residential Counselor
position. An Overview The Residential Counselor provides residential services to individuals with serious mental illnesses, substance abuse disorders, and/or developmental disabilities. Responsibilities include completing assessments, developing service plans, and providing assistance and training in daily living skills. What You Should Bring The ideal candidate will have good knowledge of household coordination and maintenance, understanding of mental illness, intellectual disabilities, or developmental delays, and empathy for individuals facing these challenges. Skills include identifying crisis behaviors, planning and supervising client activities, instructing in basic living skills, and effective communication both orally and in writing. The Opportunity Complete assessment documents and develop individualized service plans; write weekly progress notes. Maintain clinical records in compliance with licensing and Medicaid regulations. Instruct and guide residents to develop skills and confidence; monitor and record performance through progress notes. Monitor medication management, report concerns, and participate in treatment team meetings. Assist residents with recreational and educational activities. Identify and respond to emergencies and crises, referring to community resources and treatment teams. Report facility maintenance issues. Assist residents with grocery shopping, cooking, cleaning, and other activities of daily living. Provide transportation using City Vehicles. Arrange shift coverage when using sick or annual leave. Perform other duties as assigned. About the Department The Center for Adult Services (CAS) offers programs in Aging, Adult Protective Services, Clinical & Emergency Services, and Community & Residential Support Services for seniors and individuals with mental health, intellectual disabilities, and substance use disorders. CAS is committed to providing compassionate, person-centered services that promote self-determination, safety, and recovery. Minimum Requirements High School Diploma or GED, plus post-high-school training in behavioral health, medical health, substance abuse, or mental health; or at least one year of relevant work experience. A valid driver's license is required. A Bachelor's degree in a social science field and one year of experience working with individuals with mental health or substance abuse issues is preferred and qualifies for the position. Candidates must meet the criteria for Qualified Mental Health Professional status. Additional Information The position requires pre-employment checks including criminal background, VA Child Abuse/Neglect Registry, drug testing, Medicare/Medicaid fraud database check, and valid driver's license. Schedule The schedule is Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 12:00 PM to 6:00 PM; Saturdays from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM; and Sundays from 3:00 PM to 11:00 PM. As an Essential Employee, staff are expected to work during weekends, nights, holidays, or inclement weather as scheduled.
