Inside Plant & Fiber Engineer
Summary: Results-driven Inside Plant & Fiber Engineer with expertise in the design, implementation, and maintenance of high-capacity fiber-optic networks for carrier-grade, enterprise, and data center environments. Adept at managing large-scale projects from planning through turn-up, ensuring network reliability, scalability, and compliance with industry standards. Proven success collaborating across engineering, construction, and operations teams to deliver projects on time and within budget.
Base pay range
$125,000.00/yr - $135,000.00/yr
Key Responsibilities
- Design & Planning - Develop detailed engineering plans, schematics, and bills of materials for inside plant (ISP) and fiber deployments.
- Evaluate site surveys, floor plans, and network diagrams to determine optimal equipment placement and cable routing.
- Ensure compliance with industry standards (TIA/EIA, BICSI, NEC) and corporate engineering specifications.
- Implementation & Deployment - Lead fiber splicing, termination, and testing for new installations and upgrades.
- Oversee installation of racks, panels, ODFs, power systems, DWDM, and optical transport gear.
- Manage vendor and contractor activities to meet project schedules and quality requirements.
- Network Performance & Maintenance - Conduct OTDR and power meter testing to verify fiber integrity and troubleshoot issues.
- Optimize optical budgets, link loss calculations, and capacity planning.
- Perform preventive maintenance and document as-built conditions.
- Project Management & Coordination - Coordinate with Outside Plant, Transport, and Network Operations teams for seamless integration.
- Maintain detailed project documentation and update network inventory databases.
- Manage budgets, timelines, and resources to ensure cost-effective delivery.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- 5+ years experience in inside plant and fiber engineering for telecommunications or data center environments.
- Proficient with OTDRs, fusion splicers, fiber characterization tools, and optical test equipment.
- Strong knowledge of DWDM, CWDM, SONET, Ethernet, and IP transport technologies.
- Familiarity with AutoCAD, GIS, or Visio for network design.
- Excellent documentation, project management, and cross-team communication skills.
Nice to have
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Telecommunications, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- BICSI Technician or RCDD certification.
- Experience with carrier-grade optical transport systems (Cisco, Ciena, Infinera, Nokia).
- Knowledge of DC power systems and grounding standards for ISP environments.
