The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under DoD Instruction . The NG-MIP program is an opportunity for transitioning service members to gain valuable civilian work experience through an individual internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The Northrop Grumman Military Internship Program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants are not eligible for compensation from Northrop Grumman, as they continue to receive military compensation and benefits as active-duty service members.

Position Details
Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems is looking to add a Principal OR Senior Principal Electronics Engineer – Payloads Field Service Representative to join our team in Rancho Bernardo, CA. This position will deploy to the United Arab Emirates and will be in our Avionics Integration Organization supporting the MQ-4C Triton Program. The position reports to the Operations team lead within the Mission Systems Integrated Product Team (MS IPT) and will receive daily tasking and prioritization from the site lead. The selected candidate will be responsible for operations and maintenance support of the MQ-4C Triton sensors and communications systems at a Forward Operating Base (FOB).
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to, providing real time support to flight operations and maintenance addressing issues related to communications and/or payloads (MFAS Radar, EO/IR, airborne recorder, link16), coordinating with site leadership to ensure Maintenance Action Forms (MAFs) are in place, adhering to checklists and procedures, providing redlines to procedures when necessary, communicating complex technical issues to local support and stakeholders, and supporting air crew engagement and trend analysis as needed. The role requires on-site work with no remote options, and up to 10% travel after initial training.
The selected candidate will undergo training lasting approximately six (6) months at multiple US locations (e.g., Rancho Bernardo, CA; Jacksonville, FL; Baltimore, MD) with a final assignment in United Arab Emirates. Initially, shifts are 9/80; as the program matures, shifts may become 12-hour shifts that could include nights, weekends, and holidays.
There is no remote work for this role. On-site presence is required; travel for initial training is expected, with up to 10% travel thereafter.
Responsibilities
- Provide real-time support to flight operations and maintenance for communications and payloads (MFAS Radar, EO/IR, airborne recorder, Link16); perform fault isolation, remediation, and resolution
- Coordinate with site leadership to ensure MAFs are in place for all required work
- Adhere to checklists and procedures; provide redlines to procedures when necessary
- Communicate complex technical issues to local support, DAC, MOBs, and Responsible Engineers
- Support and lead air crew engagement for proper techniques in solving technical problems
- Assist with trend analysis for Responsible Engineers
- Assist AVO with Main Operating Base communications, networks, and other interfaces
- Attain and employ expertise across supported sensor and communications systems
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
- Principal Electronics Engineer – Payloads Field Service Engineer: Bachelor\’s Degree in STEM and 5 years of related experience or Military experience; OR Master\’s in STEM with 3 years of related experience or Military experience; OR PhD in STEM with 1 year of related experience or Military experience
- Senior Principal Electronics Engineer – Payloads Field Service Engineer: Bachelor\’s Degree in STEM and 8 years of related experience or Military experience; OR Master\’s in STEM with 6 years of related experience or Military experience; OR PhD in STEM with 4 years of related experience or Military experience
- Active DoD Secret clearance (with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation) with ability to obtain DoD Top Secret clearance
- Ability to obtain and maintain DoD 8140 IAT Level II (or higher) certified
- Competence in Linux, troubleshooting, engineering documents, tools and equipment
- Familiarity with payloads operations or communications networks
- Able to support assignment at location for minimum of 24 months
Preferred Qualifications
- Active DoD Top Secret clearance
- Active DoD 8140 IAT Level II or higher certification
- Understanding of MQ-4C sensors and communications payloads
- Experience with test equipment (network/spectrum analyzers, signal generators)
- Operations and maintenance experience at a field site
Salary and Benefits
Salary Range: $110,300.00 - $165,500.00; Salary Range 2: $137,400.00 - $206,000.00
The salary range is a guideline; base offers depend on scope, responsibilities, experience, education, skills, and market conditions. Overtime, shift differential, discretionary bonuses, and long-term incentives may apply.
