NG- Military Internship Program Description:

Northrop Grumman is proud to help military personnel transition to civilian careers. Approximately 1/4 of NG’s 90,000 employees self-identify as veterans, and more than 1,600 are reservists. The NG Military Internship Program (NG-MIP) is an approved SkillBridge Program under DoD Instruction and provides transitioning service members an opportunity to gain civilian work experience through an internship during their last 6 months of service, for up to 180 days. The program is open to all ranks and experience levels. SkillBridge participants do not receive compensation from Northrop Grumman; they continue to receive military pay and benefits as active-duty service members.

Responsibilities for this internship position

Northrop Grumman’s Military Internship Program (DoD SkillBridge) follows the DoDI guidance for SkillBridge. During the program, the service member is on-site at the host company performing an internship in an entry to mid-level role. The service member will be on the job training with a 40-hour work week. Goals, objectives and outcomes are described below.

Goals – Provide transitioning service members with fellowship-style job skills training during the final portion of their military commitment. Internships are designed to lead to potential full-time opportunities at the conclusion of the training and serve as a pipeline for high-speed, motivated military candidates into Northrop Grumman.

Objectives – Service Members who complete the internship are highly trained, capable future employees aligned with NG needs. The program includes professional development, leadership networking, training on NG leadership principles, company history, stakeholder engagement, product and service overview, and core job responsibilities.

Outcome – Offer transitioning service members a rewarding opportunity to join the Northrop Grumman team.

DoD SkillBridge Eligibility:

  • Has served at least 180 days on active duty
  • Is within 12 months of separation or retirement
  • Will receive an honorable discharge
  • Has taken any service TAPS/TGPS
  • Has attended or participated in an ethics brief within the last 12 months
  • Has obtained Unit Commander authorization to participate in the DoD SkillBridge Program prior to start of internship

Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems sector has an opening for a Network Engineer or Principal Network Engineer to join our Avionics Integration organization in San Diego (Rancho Bernardo), CA .

Job Summary: This role is responsible for providing support to software integration lab and end-to-end network changes, improving network architecture, troubleshooting complex issues, and ensuring network availability. The candidate should be hands-on, detail oriented, and possess strong written and verbal communication skills. The position requires on-site work and up to 25% travel.

Responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Develop engineering and automated deployments for data center system configurations
  • Collaborate with engineers to install, troubleshoot and update documented procedures
  • Work closely with Engineers and Technicians in a lab environment
  • Author and maintain technical installation, configuration, and update documentation
  • Engage with stakeholders to translate technical and business requirements into actionable network solutions

This position may be filled at either the Electronics Engineer or Principal Electronics Engineer level, depending upon the qualifications below.

Basic Qualifications for Electronics Engineer (Level 2):

  • Bachelor’s degree in a STEM discipline and 2 years of related engineering experience; or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline with 0 years of related engineering experience
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) clearance prior to employment
  • Expertise with IP subnetting
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, BGP)
  • Understanding of network automation scripting using Ansible, Python, Bash
  • Knowledge of network security features such as IP access-lists

Basic Qualifications for Principal Electronics Engineer (Level 3):

  • Bachelor’s Degree in a STEM discipline and 5 years of related engineering experience; or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 3 years of related engineering experience; or a PhD in a STEM discipline
  • Active DoD Top Secret clearance with a background investigation within the past 6 years or enrolled into Continuous Evaluation
  • Ability to obtain and maintain SAP clearance prior to employment
  • Expertise with IP subnetting
  • Understanding of TCP/IP, routing protocols (RIP, OSPF, BGP)
  • Understanding of network automation scripting using Ansible, Python, Bash
  • Knowledge of network security features such as IP access-lists
  • Experience with network design and data center architecture
  • Experience with network firewalls (Cisco ASA, Cisco Firepower, Palo Alto Networks)
  • Ability to troubleshoot complex networking issues
  • Familiar with network management protocols (SNMP, SSH, syslog, RADIUS/TACACS)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, or related discipline
  • Current SAP clearance
  • Professional networking certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CCNP Data Center, CCIE)
  • Experience with Cisco Nexus/Nexus technology, ACI Fabrics, Catalyst switches
  • Knowledge of virtualization technologies (e.g., VMware, NSX)
  • Understanding of GRE, IPsec, DMVPN, MPLS, QoS, Multicast
  • Experience with Cisco Unified Communications / VoIP
  • Familiar with network management tools (SolarWinds, Splunk, Cisco ISE)
  • Experience with Windows, Linux, VMware configuration and troubleshooting
  • Experience with HAIPE/TACLANE encryptors and other military COMSEC procedures
  • Familiar with network emulation tools (EVE-NG, GNS3, CML, VIRL)
  • Working knowledge of DISA security STIGs
  • Experience with Jira, Bitbucket, Gitlab, GitHub

Salary Range: $89,400.00 - $134,200.00; Salary Range 2: $110,300.00 - $165,500.00. The salary ranges are general guidelines and may consider factors such as scope, responsibilities, and candidate experience. Overtime, shift differential, bonuses, and long-term incentives may apply depending on the position. The company provides benefits including health insurance, life and disability insurance, savings plan, holidays, and PTO.
