Overview

Associate General Counsel role at University of Arizona in the Office of the General Counsel. This position will focus on health law issues in higher education, including clinical research issues, patient privacy, regulatory issues, and advising on matters related to clinical faculty and undergraduate and graduate medical education. The successful candidate may have responsibilities in additional practice areas common to higher education institutions, such as student life and academics, compliance, governance, privacy, risk management, information technology, and related areas.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Advise University administrators on clinical research undertaken at academic medical centers and affiliated teaching hospitals; health sciences education (undergraduate and graduate), including teaching affiliations; matters related to clinical and research activities of faculty; LCME accreditation, ACGME requirements, and HIPAA and related Privacy and Security Rules.
  • Work with other General Counsel attorneys and staff to advise on research compliance and informed consent issues, human subjects protection, IRB matters, conflicts of interest and commitment, and externally-funded research including grant preparation, implementation, and compliance.
  • Partner with University administrators, faculty, staff, and outside counsel; interact with other governmental offices, University-affiliated organizations, and ABOR to support legal services.
  • Develop and foster relationships with clients and outside counsel to support effective collaboration with OGC.

Minimum Qualifications

  • J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school.
  • Admitted to practice law in the State of Arizona, in good standing, or eligible and admitted within one year of employment.
  • A minimum of three years of substantial and progressively responsible legal experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five years of substantial and progressively responsible legal experience.
  • Experience with academic medical centers, clinical healthcare operations, and health law.
  • Experience representing large research academic institutions, colleges, or universities.
  • Knowledge of Arizona laws and regulations, including public procurement, public records, and public employment in Arizona.
