POSITION: Maintenance A - Transportation / Bus and Automotive Mechanic
LOCATION: Red Clay Transportation
REPORTS TO : Kelly Shahan, Director of Transportation
BASIC FUNCTIONS: To provide skilled work at a lead mechanic level. Works independently and performs complete diagnosis on school buses and other vehicles and equipment, repair, preventative maintenance and road testing with the proper and accurate record keeping.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITY:
  1. Responsible for maintenance and carrying out major, diagnosis and preventive functions primarily on district school buses, vehicles and all other maintenance equipment.
  2. Responsibility is not limited to heavy equipment mentioned but can also include a wide variety of mechanical vehicles and equipment including automobiles, tractors, trucks, lawn equipment, snow blowers, snow removal equipment, construction equipment and all related mechanical and hydraulic components.
  3. Able to disassemble and overhaul motors and engines
  4. Removes and installs complete assemblies such as engines, clutches, transmissions and differentials.
  5. Ability to analyze and repair air conditioning units in school buses and automotive vehicles
  6. Ability to analyze equipment issues with the use of computerized analysis programs and equipment
  7. Inspects, repairs or replaces various component parts and assemblies such as carburetors, common rail fuel injection, starters, alternators, air compressors, air dryers, cooling system components and both air and hydraulic brake systems
  8. Performs complete tune-up of gasoline, propane, and diesel engine equipment
  9. Performs preventative maintenance servicing of all components of each vehicle including but limited to: air brake adjustments, engine oil, oil filters, fuel filters, coolant filter and PH, wheel bearings, automatic transmission fluid, screens and filters, differential oil, chassis lubrication, tire maintenance and lubrication of all windows and doors of school buses.
  10. Responsible for proper disposal of waste fluids such as engine oil, coolant, contaminated fuels and miscellaneous chemicals used in the shop according to established procedures for collection and disposal by vendors
  11. Conducts electrical trouble shooting, locates and repairs wiring shorts and repairs defective electrical components.
  12. Instructs subordinate mechanics in the maintenance and repair of equipment.
  13. Performs minor body repairs and painting
  14. Uses oxygen /acetylene torch and electric welder as required
  15. Maintains written maintenance records for all equipment
  16. Responds to road service calls to repair or retrieve disabled vehicles
  17. Drive school buses on routes transporting students as required to insure efficient transportation operations
  18. Perform fueling duties for school buses and district vehicles and equipment
  19. Perform all related work as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
  1. Education equivalent to a high school diploma
  2. Seven years experience in an automotive mechanic trade, two years of which shall have been at the skilled level working on medium or heavy duty trucks and school buses
  3. Ability to follow written, oral instructions and to maintain records and reports
  4. Must have or be willing to obtain a CDL "Class B" Commercial Drivers License and a School Bus Drivers License with "S" , "Q" and air brake endorsements
  5. Must be able to obtain a D.O.T. medical physical for a CDL "Class B" Commercial and School Bus Drivers Licenses and renew annually
  6. Physical ability to perform duties such as but not limited to lifting, bending, reaching overhead, standing for extended periods of time, fueling buses, yard maintenance, etc.
  7. May be required to work evenings, extended hours or holidays as transportation operations require
  8. Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices of the automotive trade dealing with medium/heavy duty diesel and gasoline equipment including school buses
  9. Thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade

NOTE: Safety-sensitive job. Employees in this job class with a school bus driver's license will be subject to random selection for alcohol or controlled substance testing.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: 12 months pending funding
