This position reports to the Head of Technology, Digital Solutions and will lead the AI Product Development capability and team within Digital Solutions Technology for a diverse portfolio of digital health products, including software as a medical device (SaMD), connected devices, and digital health platforms. This role incubates and advances the usage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) / Machine Learning (ML) across Medical Devices by driving technical execution of AI/ML products that improve clinical workflow and outcomes for patients, providers, and customers. The role has responsibility and oversight of Digital Solutions AI/ML product development, regulated cloud infrastructure, and integration with Abbott Medical Devices Division products. It will ensure AI product data governance aligns with Abbott data strategy and ethics policies and will collaborate with IT, Privacy and Cybersecurity to ensure consistent AI cloud infrastructure and supporting technologies across Medical Devices. Key Responsibilities
MedTech AI Platform Development: Prioritize AI investments with Digital Solutions leadership; assist in assessing and developing business cases for prioritized use cases. Provide hands-on technical leadership to cross-functional portfolio teams; ensure development and deployment of scalable ML models, ML toolkit, linked data assets, data hub infrastructure and integration to visualization applications. Support program portfolio management and execution across Digital Solutions (scope, resourcing, budget, schedule). Guide development and documentation of AI/ML product lifecycle artifacts. Interface with regulatory, quality, IT, customers, and other stakeholders to ensure AI platform development meets regulatory, compliance, legal and customer requirements. Strategic Leadership
Act as the primary authority within Digital Solutions for AI/ML, cloud platforms, and data strategy. Provide strategic input into AI product development, risk management, and lifecycle planning. Partner across Abbott businesses to educate and embed AI/ML throughout the Medical Devices product lifecycle. People Leadership
Define strategy to build high-performing and inclusive AI/ML product development teams aligned with Digital Solutions’ growth, fostering innovation, compliance, and continuous improvement. Provide technical and functional leadership for AI/ML team competencies (ML scientists, ML Ops engineers, ML Software architects) to achieve team goals. Required Qualifications
Master or PhD in a relevant field (e.g., applied mathematics, computer science, engineering, applied statistics). 10+ years of AI product development experience in the medical devices / life sciences / digital health space; 5+ years in people management leading a data science team, ideally on- and offshore. Deep understanding of data science methodologies and concepts. Experience with Data Strategy and Data Lifecycle Management (including data from sensors, medical devices and wearables). Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and containerization (Docker, Kubernetes). Proficiency in programming languages such as Java, C#, Python, or JavaScript. Proficient with tools like Azure ML SDK, Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Spark, or related technologies. Strong database knowledge (SQL, NoSQL) and data modeling principles. Proven success managing teams using Agile and Scrum methodologies; strong collaboration with global teams. Strong communication, analytical, and strategic thinking skills; strong organizational skills and governance. Strong influence and negotiation skills with all levels of stakeholders. Preferred Qualifications
15 years of experience in developing and commercializing medical devices or life sciences AI products and services. MS and/or PhD in computer science or software engineering, or related field. Experience assessing AI/ML partners and managing suppliers in a large multinational organization. Familiarity with clinical settings and needs of health care professionals, health care systems, and patients. Base pay: 169,300.00 – 338,700.00. Pay ranges may vary by location.
