Job Description
WSP is initiating a search for a Senior Technical Transportation Engineer with experience in highway design to join our Civil Engineering group in the Mid-Atlantic District. The candidate may be located in Washington, DC; Philadelphia, PA; Herndon, VA; Baltimore, MD; Virginia Beach, VA; or Richmond, VA. The ideal candidate should have experience in the design of highways, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional delivery and/or alternative delivery projects. Responsibilities include design and plan production and project management support. The successful candidate will have a comprehensive range of roadway design experience related to transportation infrastructure projects, including geometric design, complete streets, temporary traffic control, and highway design. This role will be a key contributor in assisting daily activities and mentoring of our transportation team.
Primary duties center on supporting flagship infrastructure programs across the transportation, transit, site, and environmental sectors. Ideal candidates would be responsible for leading technical design programs, facilitating client engagement sessions, reinforcing internal design standards, and identifying future contract opportunities. The candidate will partner with senior team to grow technical expertise across the region.
The candidate is expected to provide subject matter technical support and leadership for multi-site/phased heavy civil programs including site layout, roadway, MOT, grading, drainage, stormwater management, utility and erosion & sediment control across public and private sectors.
Your Impact
Responsibilities include developing construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; preparing construction safety and phasing plans; updating infrastructure layout plans and coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients; approving and signing off on work; leading client-facing engagement sessions; managing large-scale projects including budgets, schedules, and supervision of subcontractors and staff; assisting with permit applications reviews and ensuring compliance with regulations and standards; communicating findings and recommendations; developing new business opportunities; mentoring staff; overseeing data collection and analysis for project development and design; applying advanced civil engineering techniques across project phases; conducting investigations and inspections; participating in project inception to completion; and coordinating with team members and clients.
Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans with coordination across owners, disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
Approve and sign-off on work.
Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda.
Lead and manage large-scale heavy civil projects, including budget, schedule, resource, and subcontractor management.
Assist with engineering review of permit applications, plans and specifications, standby plans, and contracts; ensure compliance with regulations and standards.
Meet with public or private entities to discuss engineering challenges and programs.
Prepare technical reports and presentations to address engineering issues or opportunities.
Develop a client base for high-level civil engineering services and identify additional business opportunities.
Mentor staff to support professional growth.
Provide oversight in data collection and analysis from sites, surveys, GIS data, and other sources for project development and construction.
Apply high-level civil engineering techniques across concept development to operation.
Conduct investigations and inspections of site conditions to ensure conformance with rules and standards.
Participate in project management from inception to completion, including rehabilitation, redesign, and construction.
Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams and clients; remain current with latest civil engineering methods.
Exercise ethical decision-making and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and policies.
Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
Required Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline.
10+ years of post-education experience in engineering and civil design.
P.E. license required (multi-state preferred).
Proficiency with civil engineering principles, design/build processes, permitting, and related issues.
Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and program/construction management; including rehabilitation and reconstruction projects.
Strong knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record-keeping.
Ability to perform technical computations and interpret plans and specifications.
Experience with inspections and investigations of facilities or structures under applicable regulations.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for engineering and non-engineering audiences.
Self-leadership with the ability to guide mid- to senior-level staff and ensure QA/QC adherence.
Proficiency with as-built design software (e.g., MicroStation, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, GeoSlope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS).
Strong technical writing and deliverable preparation skills; capable of complex work.
Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities; ability to coordinate subcontractors and ensure safety.
Willingness to travel occasionally as project needs require.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s Degree in Engineering.

Expected Salary (all locations): $111,200.00 - $198,300.00
