Overview
The Manager of SALT Indirect Tax Automation applies industry knowledge and experience to collaborate with clients to implement indirect tax automation tools. Tools may include Vertex O Series, Vertex Q Series, Vertex Indirect Tax Returns, OneSource Indirect Tax Determination, OneSource Compliance, Sovos (Taxware), and Avalara AvaTax. Additional tools may include Power BI, Alteryx, data analytics, and other products. The role is hands-on, client facing, and implementation focused. A strong knowledge of indirect taxes (Sales & Use, GST and VAT) is preferred, with the ability to design, build, and configure optimal tax system solutions for clients.
In addition to client service activities, the Manager is expected to participate in business development activities, assist with proposals and fee estimates, and may lead training at client sites, provide onsite post-implementation support, and assist clients with on-site use of the implemented tools.
Job Duties
Product Knowledge
– Implements tax technology tools with working knowledge of leading indirect tax tools (Vertex O Series, OneSource Indirect Tax Determination, Sovos, Avalara).
Designs and implements tax compliance systems (e.g., Vertex Returns, OneSource Compliance, Avalara).
Applies knowledge of state and local tax filing requirements.
Learns additional tools as needed for client implementations and competitive knowledge.
Project Management
– Serves as Project Lead/Manager on third-party indirect tax software implementations and related automation projects.
Manages system integration projects involving major ERP and billing systems (e.g., SAP, Oracle, PeopleSoft, JD Edwards, MS365/AX, NetSuite).
Leads end-to-end system implementations (process design, software selection, implementation, user acceptance, training, go-live, post go-live).
Delivers projects on time and within budget; manages client expectations and communicates complex technical items clearly.
Develops customized applications for various database platforms and develops sales tax automation proposals.
Participates in sales and proposal development meetings and may speak at industry events; contributes to Thought Leadership content.
Strategy Development
– Introduces and develops new ideas to provide operational value to clients; identifies lessons learned and suggests process and method improvements; contributes ideas for marketing and documents processes for automation.
Other Duties As Required
– Supervisory responsibilities include supervising and training staff as appropriate.
Education and Qualifications
Bachelor's Degree required; focus in Accounting, Information Systems, or Computer Science preferred.
Experience
Four (4) or more years of work experience with explicit involvement in indirect tax system implementation projects, required.
Demonstrated successful implementation of indirect tax systems such as Vertex, Thomson Reuters, Avalara, and Sovos, required.
License/Certifications
Licensed CPA, EA, JD/LLM, MTX, CMI, PMP or similar certifications preferred.
Vertex, Thomson Reuters, Avalara, Sovos indirect tax system certification preferred.
Software
Indirect tax determination systems (Vertex, OneSource, Sovos or Avalara) required.
Indirect tax compliance systems (Vertex Returns, OneSource Compliance, Avalara compliance) preferred.
Indirect Tax Exemption certificates modules (Vertex, OneSource, Avalara, Sovos) preferred.
Alteryx, Power BI and RPA knowledge preferred.
Strong knowledge of MS Excel, MS Access, MS PowerPoint preferred.
Other Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
Solid verbal and written communication skills; strong client development and relationship-building abilities.
Executive presence and ability to be the primary client contact; capable of preparing and delivering presentations.
Ability to work within teams and manage engagement aspects including budgets and project plans.
Travel requirement: 25-40%.
Individual salaries offered are determined after consideration of qualifications, experience, skills, and geography. National Range: $79,800 - $168,000; Maryland Range: $79,800 - $168,000; NYC/Long Island/Westchester Range: $79,800 - $168,000; Washington DC Range: $79,800 - $168,000.
