Purpose & Scope This role combines deep theoretical expertise in geophysics with advanced computational skills. You will conduct original R&D, deliver scalable software solutions, and ensure that new geophysical technologies are effectively integrated with TGS’s broader
data science initiatives
and operational workflows. Key Responsibilities
Conduct research on seismic imaging, inversion, and advanced geophysical algorithms. Collaborate with Data Science teams to adapt AI/ML techniques to geophysical workflows. Design and optimize production-grade software solutions that integrate seamlessly with seismic processing pipelines. Play a key role in technical development projects, ensuring new methods transition effectively from R&D to production. Establish best practices for geophysical modeling aligned with TGS’s strategic objectives. Assist in enhancing existing production software for performance, scalability, and reliability. Partner with data scientists, software engineers, and geophysicists to validate and deploy algorithms. Provide guidance and technical input to junior researchers and interns. Support project teams by connecting geophysical theory with practical implementation. Stay ahead of emerging trends in geophysics, AI, and high-performance computing. Deliver technical presentations internally and externally, reinforcing TGS’s leadership in seismic R&D. Key Competencies
Advanced Theoretical Knowledge: Solid foundation in mathematics, physics, and geophysical modeling. Computational Skills: Proficiency in programming (C/C++, Python, Fortran) with experience in parallel and GPU-accelerated computing. Innovation & Strategic Thinking: Ability to identify research opportunities and connect geophysics with AI/data science advances. Leadership & Mentorship: Proven record of guiding projects and working in interdisciplinary teams. Communication & Influence: Skilled in articulating complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences. Qualifications
Ph.D. (or master’s with extensive experience) in Geophysics, Physics, Applied Mathematics, or related field. 8+ years of experience in seismic data processing, imaging, or geophysical R&D. Proven track record of developing and deploying advanced geophysical algorithms in production settings. Strong coding background with experience in HPC and large-scale data workflows. Experience collaborating with data science teams on ML/AI-enabled geophysical applications. Seniority level
