The Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs at the University of Massachusetts Boston invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor to join our faculty beginning September 1, 2026. Position and Department

Assistant Professor, Public Policy and Public Affairs Campus: UMass Boston Department: Public Policy & Public Affairs College: John W. McCormack School of Policy and Global Studies University: University of Massachusetts Boston Qualifications and Focus

The department seeks candidates with a doctorate in applied social sciences. Suitable fields include public health, health policy, sociology, political science, public policy, public administration, and related disciplines. Priority will be given to candidates with expertise in health and/or economic inequality by race/ethnicity, disability status, gender, and other factors as they relate to health policy, international development, or a combination of health policy and international development. Appointment requires completion of a doctoral degree no later than August 31, 2026. Applicants should have capacity to teach in multiple programs: the Ph.D. in Public Policy, the Master’s programs in Public Administration and Public Policy, and undergraduate courses. The department welcomes scholars using qualitative or quantitative methods and those engaged in policy-relevant, publicly engaged scholarship who collaborate with community-based organizations, nonprofits, NGOs, and/or government agencies. Candidates should have an emerging or established research program with evidence of external funding or potential to obtain external funding. Experience in designing diverse course syllabi, teaching diverse student groups, and creating pedagogical environments that address racial disparity, gender inequality, and intersectional inequities is desirable. Responsibilities

The successful candidate will teach in graduate and undergraduate programs, contribute to the methods training core, and support graduate courses related to their expertise. They will also engage in research and service that aligns with departmental goals and external partnerships. Application Materials and Review

The Department of Public Policy and Public Affairs supports four graduate programs: the Ph.D. in Public Policy, the NASPAA-accredited Master’s of Public Administration, the Master’s of Public Policy, and a certificate program in Gender, Leadership and Public Policy. The department emphasizes training public service professionals and policy scholars across social science disciplines and methods.
