Overview

Counselor: Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) – Ventura College Under the general supervision of a dean, a Counselor provides comprehensive counseling, career guidance, and advisement services to students from diverse backgrounds to support attainment of academic, vocational, and personal objectives. Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive academic, personal, and vocational counseling to students; assist with educational planning and survival skills; foster academic success and retention; help students select a course of study, major, or certificate program. Refer students to appropriate support services, monitor academic progress, and counsel on academic probation. Develop individual plans for students preparing to enter the labor market; identify skill training needs and opportunities for internships, job search, work experience, and related employment. Counsel students regarding career choices, goal setting, and program requirements; provide information on matriculation processes at other colleges or universities. Assist in outreach activities to identify and recruit eligible students and facilitate enrollment; conduct orientation events describing programs, services, procedures, and financial aid. Maintain current records of counseling sessions; compile statistical data and prepare reports related to program operations and progress. Assist in preparing counseling publications and workshops; advocate for students with special needs and collaborate with instructors and campus/community resources to support goals. Assist in developing and implementing programs focusing on access and retention for targeted populations; provide work direction to others. Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in counseling, rehabilitation counseling, clinical psychology, counseling psychology, guidance counseling, educational counseling, social work, career development, or the equivalent; or possession of an appropriate California Community College Credential; AND For EOPS counselors hired after October 24, 1987: either (a) nine semester units of coursework predominantly relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages, or (b) six semester units or the equivalent of a college-level counseling practicum or counseling field-work in an EOPS program or related program; AND two years of occupational experience in work relating to ethnic minorities or persons handicapped by language, social or economic disadvantages. All coursework must be from an accredited college or university. Foreign transcripts may require evaluation per policy; review equivalency procedures if your degree title does not exactly match minimum qualifications. Additional Information
