Position Summary
The Senior Communications Technician will provide hands-on expertise in the daily operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems. This role is crucial for ensuring the reliability and operational readiness of communication systems across field sites. The technician will be responsible for executing tasks and service tickets, prioritizing and completing all work in accordance with technical standards and mission-critical timelines. Key Responsibilities
Deliver hands-on expertise in the operations, maintenance, and troubleshooting of LMR systems. Install, align, and configure P25 trunked and conventional radio infrastructure (e.g., repeaters, base stations, antenna systems). Set up and program subscriber units (portable/mobile radios) using appropriate radio management software. Install and configure dispatch consoles (e.g., MCC 7500) and ancillary equipment like logging recorders. Execute tasks and service tickets, ensuring all work is prioritized and completed according to technical standards and mission-critical timelines. Maintain a thorough understanding of the operational characteristics of LMR infrastructure, including subscriber units, repeaters, base stations, and networked communications assets. Perform effective fault isolation, routine preventive maintenance, and rapid corrective actions to sustain full system availability and operational readiness. Diagnose and repair system faults, including RF issues, IP networking errors, and hardware malfunctions. Conduct performance checks and run diagnostics on RF, network, and subscriber components. Collaborate with team members and stakeholders to ensure seamless communication and system functionality across field sites. Document maintenance activities and system performance to support continuous improvement and compliance with operational standards. Complete maintenance logs, QA checklists, and service reports for each task. Qualifications
Proven experience in the operations and maintenance of LMR systems. In-depth knowledge of LMR infrastructure, including subscriber units, repeaters, base stations, and networked communications assets. Strong troubleshooting skills and the ability to perform fault isolation and corrective actions efficiently. Excellent organizational skills to manage tasks and service tickets effectively. Ability to work under pressure and meet mission-critical timelines. Technical Skills Required:
P25 Phase I/II trunked and conventional systems Motorola LMR infrastructure (repeaters, base stations, consoles, logging recorders) Radio frequency (RF) propagation and signal analysis Encryption/key management tools (e.g., KVLs) IP networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, routers, switches)
Experience with tools such as:
Service monitors, spectrum analyzers, watt meters Radio programming software (e.g., Radio Management or CPS) Dispatch consoles (e.g., MCC 7500/7100)
Must possess or be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance in accordance with agency requirements. Preferred Skills
Experience in routine preventive maintenance and system documentation. Strong communication skills to collaborate with team members and stakeholders. Ability to adapt to changing environments and operational needs. Salary and Benefits
Certain states and localities require employers to post a reasonable estimate of salary range. A reasonable estimate of the current base pay range for this position is $100,000.00 to $114,000.00 annually. Actual salary will be based on a variety of factors, including shift, location, experience, skill set, performance, licensure and certification, and business needs. The range for this position in other geographic locations may differ.
