Fall 2026 Right to Counsel Housing Staff Attorneys and Law Graduates
Legal Services NYC (LSNYC) fights poverty and seeks racial, social and economic justice for low-income New Yorkers. LSNYC is the largest civil legal services provider in the country, with more than 600 staff across five boroughs.
The Opportunity
LSNYC seeks law graduates and/or staff attorneys to join the Fall 2026 class of Right to Counsel (RTC) Housing attorneys as we continue to implement New York City\'s Right to Counsel law. The RTC Housing Unit handles litigation in housing court, administrative hearings, state and federal courts, and appeals, to help tenants defend their homes and secure tenant protections.
The anticipated start date is September 2026.
Salary and Compensation
1-10 years: $88,181 – $113,737
11-20 years: $116,338 – $137,347
21+ years: $143,685 – $169,852
LSNYC offers an expansive benefits package, including healthcare with low copays, dental, vision, generous vacation (21 days first year; 28 days/year thereafter), 14 paid holidays, 18 sick days/year, parental leave, and student loan debt assistance through the Loan Repayment Assistance Program. All non-managerial staff are part of a union. The position is hybrid with 50% remote work, depending on duties.
Responsibilities
Conduct intake and provide full legal representation in housing court for tenants referred to LSNYC through the RTC initiative and other referrals.
Litigate cases in housing court, administrative forums, appellate courts, and other state and federal courts, including affirmative cases challenging agencies and actors.
Develop expertise in housing court practice, housing programs and subsidies, and public benefits.
Provide legal advice and counseling to tenants, conduct clinics and know-your-rights workshops.
Identify trends for potential impact litigation and provide trainings to advocates, tenant associations, and community groups.
Qualifications
J.D. from an accredited law school and admission (or eligibility) to practice law in New York.
Commitment to social justice and serving low-income communities and communities of color.
Ability to communicate with diverse populations and conduct community outreach in low-income neighborhoods.
Excellent advocacy, writing, and leadership skills; strong time management for a fast-paced caseload.
Experience in housing, landlord/tenant, or related advocacy preferred.
Spanish or another language frequently used by clients preferred.
