Overview
MacDonald-Bedford LLC is seeking a qualified and experienced Fire Protection Engineer to support a range of federal, institutional, and infrastructure projects. This role focuses on providing expert-level fire protection and life safety engineering services, supporting the design, construction, renovation, and modernization of facilities, including large construction (MILCON or facility development projects) and repair, renovation, and sustainment (SRM or infrastructure improvements). Key Responsibilities
Design and review fire protection systems including fire alarms, sprinklers, standpipes, fire pumps, and smoke control systems. Perform hydraulic calculations, fire modeling, and other specialized engineering analyses to ensure system performance. Ensure all designs comply with applicable codes and standards, including NFPA, IBC, IFC, FM Global, UL, and local regulations. Conduct fire hazard analyses, risk assessments, and fire safety evaluations for buildings and critical infrastructure. Prepare technical reports, drawings, and specifications in support of design submissions and permitting packages. Provide construction administration services, including submittal reviews, RFI responses, on-site inspections, and system commissioning. Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, including architects, engineers, contractors, and client stakeholders, on new construction, renovation, and retrofit projects. Support code consulting services and AHJ (Authority Having Jurisdiction) coordination. Remain up to date on emerging technologies, industry trends, and updates to fire protection codes and standards. Contribute to the development and enforcement of corporate fire safety policies where applicable. Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related discipline. 5+ years of experience in fire protection engineering, including design and construction oversight. Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, HASS, Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS), or other hydraulic calculation software. In-depth working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards, building codes (IBC, IFC), and fire protection best practices. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to coordinate effectively within multidisciplinary teams. Ability to work on complex project types independently and in a collaborative environment. Preferred Qualifications
Professional Engineer (PE) license. NICET certifications in fire alarm systems, sprinkler design, or special hazards. Prior experience supporting federal agencies (e.g., USACE, GSA, VA) or healthcare/military projects. Proficient in LEED standards, ATFP (Anti-Terrorism/Force Protection), and performance-based design methodologies. Experience working on LEED-certified or sustainable design projects.
