Overview
Essnova Solutions is seeking an AI Ethics Subject Matter Expert (SME) to serve as the senior technical authority on Responsible Artificial Intelligence (RAI) for a Department of Defense program. This role will guide the development, assessment, and integration of ethical AI practices into defense projects and provide expert technical input into governance, policy, and operational decisions. TS with SCI Eligibility Key Responsibilities
Serve as the primary technical advisor to Government stakeholders on AI ethics, human factors, cybersecurity, system safety, and policy implications. Design, plan, and facilitate Responsible AI (RAI) Tabletop Exercises to assess risks, validate ethical toolkits, and inform refinement of AI governance processes. Conduct comprehensive RAI gap analyses, identifying shortfalls and recommending Courses of Action (COAs) to address DoD capability and process needs. Provide expert reviews of AI/RAI products, ensuring technical accuracy, alignment with policy guidance, and operational feasibility in defense contexts. Contribute to the creation and refinement of RAI toolkits, templates, and governance frameworks used across the Department. Monitor, research, and analyze national and international developments in AI ethics, translating emerging best practices into actionable recommendations. Advise leadership on integrating ethical considerations throughout the AI product lifecycle from requirements and design through deployment and sustainment. Liaise with defense, interagency, industry, and academic partners to ensure broad alignment and interoperability in RAI practices. Support policy development efforts by providing technical expertise grounded in AI operations, ethics, and risk management. Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Applied Ethics, AI Ethics, Data Ethics, or related discipline. Active TS with SCI eligibility. 8+ years of related IT experience, including at least 5 years in artificial intelligence. 2+ years of experience in one or more of the following: cybersecurity, human factors, ethics, or policy. 2+ years of experience designing and executing Responsible AI (RAI) Tabletop Exercises. 2+ years of experience conducting RAI gap analyses for the Department of Defense, including scoping COAs and projects to address capability needs. Desired Attributes
Advanced degree in Ethics, Public Policy, Data Science, AI, or related discipline. Strong track record of bridging technical expertise with policy decision-making. Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate complex technical issues into actionable policy and operational guidance. Seniority level
