Position Summary
We are seeking a Solutions Architect to lead the deployment of an agency-wide metadata governance solution with a strong emphasis on geospatial data for a national security mission. This role requires strong customer engagement skills, as the candidate will work directly with the Chief Data Officer (CDO), technical leads, the agency's communication team, and other C-suite executives to define and implement a metadata governance strategy. This role focuses on integrating Apache Solr with modern data lake technologies to improve metadata management at scale. The Solutions Architect will interface with leadership to communicate technical strategy, translate business needs into technical solutions, and ensure the successful deployment of Voyagers platform within the agency. This is a unique opportunity to work on cutting-edge data management technologies while directly influencing executive-level decisions within a mission-critical environment. Responsibilities
Work directly with the CDO, their technical leads, communication team, and other C-suite executives to align technical solutions with business and mission goals. Advise agency leadership on metadata governance best practices, data discoverability, and information retrieval strategies Translate executive-level priorities into actionable technical solutions, ensuring alignment with national security objectives Work onsite in Springfield, VA, supporting classified deployments of Voyager software on C2S networks. Lead the implementation of a geospatial metadata registry, ensuring effective use of Apache Solr/Lucene or other enterprise search technologies as the search backbone. Provide expertise in optimizing search performance, query design, and geospatial indexing within Solr/Lucene environments. Collaborate with Voyagers internal development team and system integrators to customize solutions for enterprise-scale geospatial data. Troubleshoot and resolve data indexing, storage, and search challenges in collaboration with onsite teams. Define and document requirements, workflows, and architectures for scalable metadata management. Identify and advocate for software enhancements that improve metadata integration, search, and governance. Develop technical demonstrations and proofs-of-concept to showcase capabilities and ensure stakeholder buy-in. Technical skills
Current TS/SCI Clearance with CI Poly (or willingness to obtain CI Poly). Privileged User credentials are a plus. Experience with search engine technologiesApache Solr/Lucene preferred; experience with Elasticsearch or similar platforms is also acceptable. Knowledge of Apache Iceberg and Apache Parquet for big data storage and analytics. Strong understanding of data lake architectures and metadata management at scale. Strong understanding of geospatial data workflows, GIS technologies, and tools (e.g., Esri ArcGIS). Experience deploying and managing search solutions in AWS (C2S or other cloud environments). Proficiency in programming and scripting languages, including Java, Python, and JavaScript. Experience with relational databases such as Oracle, SQL Server, or similar RDBMS. Knowledge of automation tools (e.g., Ansible, Chef, Puppet) and version control systems (e.g., Git). Familiarity with authentication protocols (LDAP, AD, SAML) and security principles in classified environments. Strong problem-solving and debugging skills, with the ability to optimize search and indexing performance. Excellent communication skills, with experience presenting solutions and technical concepts to both technical teams and leadership. Ability to define technical requirements, design architectures, and produce documentation. Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience/combined education. Minimum/General Experience 3 years.
