Manager, Ontology and Data Modeling The Manager of Ontology and Data Modeling is responsible for developing, implementing, and maintaining enterprise ontologies in support of Capital One's Data Strategy. This role partners with Technology, Product, and other Capital One teams to support the development and integration of semantic technology into Capital One products and services. It supports an emerging semantic program and communicates the value of semantic technology and knowledge organization concepts. Primary Responsibilities
Define clear and actionable problem statements to help teams deliver results while demonstrating expertise in ontologies and optimized data models Leverage customer insights to influence priorities and roadmap development, and drive alignment on acceptance criteria among stakeholders Own and prioritize the near-term Ontology and Data Modeling roadmap to deliver business outcomes, identify leverage points in complex problems, and define success metrics Make balanced decisions about risks of actions taken and not taken, innovating iteratively in a well-managed way Collaborate with Technology, Machine Learning, and other Capital One teams to support the development and integration of semantic capabilities into products and services, guiding design decisions Deliver value by creating reusable, extensible, and resilient capabilities and proactively identify opportunities when key metrics are not performing Develop and communicate a 6-month vision to senior stakeholders and partner teams with transparency on risks, impediments, and dependencies; build broad relationships for horizontal influence Contribute to team culture and recruiting by leading activities to attract and retain talent and by mentoring junior ontology and data modeling associates Manage teams that develop, implement, and govern ontologies and optimized data models in collaboration with stakeholders Contribute to data integration and mapping efforts to harmonize data with Capital One's upper and domain ontologies Advocate the value of Capital One's ontology, semantics, and data standardization efforts across the business Maintain awareness of competitor and industry developments related to ontology use, knowledge organization, data modeling, and machine learning Understand and adhere to W3C standards related to ontologies (RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS, SHACL) Develop standards, guidelines, and direction for ontology, data modeling, semantics, and data standardization within Capital One Role-Based Competencies
Ability to develop and implement ontologies and data models in collaboration with stakeholders across data management, search, product management, machine learning, and enterprise initiatives Ability to communicate and advocate the value of industry standards, applications, and open source data sets Ability to analyze and implement knowledge organization strategies with tools that support machine learning and semantic enrichment Awareness of competitor and industry developments related to ontology use, linked data, semantic technology, graph databases, knowledge organization, data modeling, and metadata Ability to test and troubleshoot new or updated models and systems Ability to create processes and tools to establish, maintain, and update ontology, taxonomy, and other data models Ability to maintain and update data and models according to industry best practices Ability to support knowledge organization workshops to enhance enterprise ontology, taxonomy, or data models Ability to assist in the implementation and support of data standardization and ontology governance strategies and processes Develop a strong understanding of Capital One's business, processes, customers, users, and business needs to solve data management problems Ability to communicate the big picture and inspire others; assess opportunities and risks through analysis of current and future trends Strong research skills Ability to present ideas clearly and with confidence; deliver presentations and status updates tailored to the audience Ability to foster strong relationships with business partners and support semantic projects across departments Focus on improving responsiveness and quality of solutions Demonstrates high energy, passion, motivation, and creativity in problem solving Basic Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics At least 4 years’ experience in a metadata-related field (ontology, taxonomy, semantics or computational linguistics) At least 4 years’ experience or training in W3C standards including linked and canonical data and ontologies (JSON, XML, RDF, RDFS, OWL, SKOS) At least 4 years’ experience or training in ontology and linked data tools (Protégé, TopQuadrant, PoolParty, Stardog, AnzoGraph, Neptune, or Data.World) At least 4 years’ experience or training with SQL or SPARQL Qualifications
Master’s degree or PhD in information science, computer science, engineering, library science, ontology, semantics or computational linguistics Understanding of ontology development and the use of controlled vocabularies and thesauri to enhance enterprise data discovery and management Familiarity with graph databases and related technologies Familiarity with Python or R Familiarity with JSON, OpenAPI/YAML, AVRO Familiarity with Agile principles, processes, and methodologies Familiarity with Amazon Web Services Detail-oriented with strong problem-solving abilities Strong reading and writing skills Strong project management experience Excellent communication skills and ability to present ideas clearly and confidently Ability to work independently and as part of a team to meet deadlines This role does not sponsor employment authorization for new applicants. The minimum and maximum full-time annual salaries for this role are listed below, by location. Salaries refer to the amount Capital One is willing to pay at the time of this posting and may vary by location. Salaries for part-time roles will be prorated. Cambridge, MA: $158,400 - $180,800; McLean, VA: $158,400 - $180,800; New York, NY: $172,800 - $197,200; Richmond, VA: $144,000 - $164,400. Other locations follow the applicable local pay range. This role is eligible for performance-based incentive compensation, which may include cash bonuses and/or long-term incentives (LTI). Incentives may be discretionary or non-discretionary depending on the plan. Capital One offers a comprehensive benefits package. Eligibility varies by status and level.
