Overview
Tufts Technology Services (TTS) invites applications for a Senior Bioinformatics Specialist within TTS Research and Geospatial Technology Services (RGTS). This role provides faculty and student support for bioinformatics, high-performance computing (HPC) and visualization services that support Tufts research activities. Responsibilities
Participate in planning, development, management and support of core bioinformatics, HPC and visualization services to enable Tufts research activities. Provide technical support and training; offer consulting to faculty, post-docs and students from diverse academic backgrounds. Act as liaison with other TTS directorates to ensure successful delivery of services to the Tufts community. Apply a strong research background in biomedical and/or quantitative science, with expertise in bioinformatics algorithms, databases and analyses, with a focus on next-generation sequencing. Coordinate project and data management; facilitate communication between programmers and wet-lab scientists. Requirements
Basic Requirements: 5 years of experience with at least 2 years in bioinformatics in a higher-education, research, or scientific environment Master’s degree in bioinformatics, biomedical or quantitative science Experience in at least one bioinformatics domain (e.g., microarray analysis, RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, Exome-seq, or related analyses) Strong UNIX/Linux skills; experience with HPC and visualization tools Experience with mathematical software (e.g., Matlab, R, Mathematica, Maple, Stata) and data visualization tools Proficiency in high-level programming languages (Python, Perl, Java, C/C++) Experience deploying and maintaining public-domain/open-source software using Apache, Linux, MySQL; familiarity with HPC environments and queuing systems (LSF, PBS, Moab, Torque) Strong research background in bioinformatics and related methodologies Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills; strong customer service and outreach abilities Experience teaching and coordinating projects; ability to support diverse, multi-disciplinary teams Working knowledge of basic web development and wikis Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines; comfortable with a range of activities from planning to consulting and technical support Experience developing services for faculty and students, including sustainable business modeling Willingness to travel between Tufts campuses (Medford/Somerville, Boston, Grafton) Preferred Qualifications
PhD in bioinformatics, biomedical or quantitative science with at least 5 years of work experience Experience working directly with wet laboratories to perform analyses Ability to interpret and present large data sets Knowledge of biology, genetics, and cell biology Experience presenting biological results to diverse audiences Experience with R/BioConductor, GenePattern, Galaxy or similar environments Biostatistics competency with emphasis on bioinformatics tools Tufts University is an AA/EO employer and actively seeks candidates from diverse backgrounds.
