Marine Layer designs and produces our own line of laid-back apparel with a growing network of stores and a robust e-commerce and wholesale presence. We are a B Corporation committed to social and environmental responsibility, including employee training and management practices focused on sustainability. We are seeking a creative and dedicated Bottoms Designer to join our Design Team. The role emphasizes women’s and men’s denim design and collaboration across teams to deliver high-quality, sustainable fashion. Key Responsibilities
Lead the design process for women’s and men’s bottoms, ensuring alignment with seasonal trends and brand identity. Conduct market research to identify bottoms trends and consumer preferences. Create CAD sketches using Adobe Illustrator and develop technical packages for sample production. Collaborate with Merchandising, Product Development, and Marketing to ensure cohesive product launches. Develop and innovate in fit, wash, fabric selection, and trim detailing for market-relevant designs. Oversee the bottoms design workflow from concept to production, including sample management and fit sessions. Prepare presentation documents showcasing design concepts for internal and external stakeholders. Mentor junior designers and foster a collaborative team environment. Stay updated with industry trends and technology to elevate the design process. Ensure designs meet brand standards, target price points, and commercial viability. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Apparel Design or related field required; equivalent experience considered. Minimum of 5 years of denim and bottoms design experience with a strong portfolio. Experience in women’s and men’s is preferred; women’s experience required. Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite and PLM software. Strong knowledge of garment construction, fabrics, denim, washes, and production processes. Excellent sketching and tech pack creation skills. Strong communication, organizational, and multitasking abilities. Located in the San Francisco Bay Area; in-person collaboration required several days a week.
