Overview
The Colorado Department of Education (CDE) is hiring for a Senior Literacy Consultant. This term-limited role ends on June 30, 2027. Incumbent will complete work for CDE within Colorado. Position Summary Are you passionate about literacy and supporting Colorado students with learning to read? The Senior Literacy Consultant supports the implementation of the READ Act. Responsibilities include managing professional development contracts and providing guidance and professional development to districts and schools in evidence-based reading instruction for multilingual learners, students with disabilities with an IEP, and students at risk for or identified as having dyslexia. This is a term-limited position ending June 30, 2027.
Major Duties And Responsibilities
Manage and oversee contracts with professional development vendors.
Collaborate with development vendors to maintain records and implementation plans for district-based teacher training in evidence-based reading instruction.
Evaluate district and teacher training needs in reading interventions for multilingual learners, students with disabilities (IEP), and students at risk for or identified as having dyslexia.
Develop professional development and resources with internal staff and vendors to support educators in evidence-based reading instruction.
Maintain records and implementation plans for district-based training on reading education.
Review unified improvement plans, instructional programs, professional development, and assessments as required by the READ Act.
Analyze K-3 reading data with districts and schools and provide strategies to increase literacy achievement.
Support the development and maintenance of public-facing professional development resources, including online platforms (e.g., Moodle).
Attend required CDE and Office meetings and participate in required professional development.
Organize and deliver trainings (virtual or in-person) on evidence-based reading practices for multilingual learners and students with disabilities, in alignment with the READ Act.
Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Master’s degree in literacy, reading, elementary education or related field with coursework supporting scientifically based reading research and application in grades K-3.
5+ years of public education experience including elementary classroom experience, with at least 1 year in literacy instructional leadership (e.g., instructional coaching or school/district leadership).
Experience developing and providing professional development on the science of reading or related topics.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Teams, and Zoom.
Strong organizational skills, ability to manage multiple projects, and effective written and oral communication.
Ability to travel as required (20-40%), including potential overnight stays; ability to organize regional trainings.
Ability to pass a background check.
Preferred
Knowledge of evidence-based practices for culturally and linguistically diverse learners and students with disabilities.
Knowledge of adult learning theory and evidence-based reading instruction for multilingual learners, students with disabilities with an IEP, and students at risk for dyslexia.
Conditions Of Employment

Ability and willingness to independently arrange and complete travel (20-40%).
Work extended schedules as needed; report to work location per business needs.
