Working Title: MBS Animal Survey Supervisor Job Class: Natural Resources Program Supervisor Intermediate-Ecological Resources Location: St. Paul • Telework Eligible: Yes, hybrid • Full-Time • Regular/Temporary: Unlimited The Minnesota Biological Survey (MBS) units manage statewide surveys, monitoring and research of native and rare animal species. This position develops and implements a statewide program to survey, monitor and research Minnesota fauna, manages budgets and projects, and supervises a team of professionals, data specialists, and contractors across the state. The role collaborates to collect, interpret and provide information on fauna and habitats to stakeholders for biodiversity conservation, management and policy development.
Responsibilities
Develop and maintain a plan for statewide animal survey, monitoring and research as part of the Minnesota Biological Survey (MBS) Unit.
Prepare annual spending plans and budgets from state and federal sources; identify funding opportunities to ensure projects are adequately funded.
Perform supervisory functions to support MBS Zoology staff in survey, monitoring and research activities and ensure alignment with program goals.
Oversee and participate in MBS Animal field surveys, monitoring and research statewide.
Provide direction on information systems and oversee compilation, management and analysis of MBS data related to animals and their habitats.
Provide technical expertise through written reports, oral presentations, and participation on teams.
Develop policy recommendations and negotiate outcomes through interdisciplinary group participation.
Contribute to maintaining a healthy, safe, productive and inclusive work environment.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in zoology, ecology, biology, conservation biology or related field.
Four years of professional level experience in designing, implementing, and participating in biological field surveys, monitoring or research related to native or rare animal species and habitats.
Experience directing staff or teams with coaching, meeting facilitation, conflict resolution, listening, and negotiation.
Administrative and budgetary skills to manage project budgets in compliance with policy.
Project management and time management skills to prioritize assignments and ensure timely completion.
Experience assembling, analyzing, and interpreting zoological data using GIS, GPS, data collection apps, spreadsheets and databases.
Leadership and planning skills to develop long-range operational and short-range work plans.
Written and communication skills to translate technical information into public-facing documents and presentations.
Collaborative skills to work within and across organizations.
Human relations and coaching skills to motivate and develop staff; ability to support inclusivity in accommodations and development.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree in zoology, ecology, biology, conservation biology or related field.
Experience with study design, data analysis and/or statistics in zoology.
Fund-raising and/or legislative process experience.
Direct supervision of staff experience.
Program or higher-level budget management experience.
Additional Requirements
Unrestricted Class D Driver’s license with a clear driving record.
Ability to meet physical requirements and work in environmental conditions, with or without accommodations.
Eligibility to work in the United States and completion of employment eligibility verification upon hire.
