About Joliet The ExxonMobil Joliet Refinery is located about 40 miles southwest of Chicago in Channahon, Illinois. Residents of the area have access to many local activities, from shopping and dining to museums, golf courses, parks, trails and auto racing events. The Joliet Refinery offers a desirable work location with access to Chicagoland opportunities.
The Joliet Refinery is the second newest refinery in the United States and will celebrate its 50th year in 2022. As the center of ExxonMobil’s Midwest integrated operations, it includes pipelines, lubes production, distribution and fuels marketing. The refinery is highly energy efficient, processing nearly 250,000 barrels of crude per day into gasoline, ultra-low sulfur diesel, asphalt and other products.

What role you will play in our team We are seeking a Senior Chemical Process Engineer to join our Joliet manufacturing facility in Joliet, Illinois.
Our Senior Chemical Process Engineers play a pivotal role in the successful operation of our plants and lead improvements to unit performance in safety, production and reliability. You will think strategically, execute thoughtfully, and collaborate across teams, levels and situations. In this role, you will serve as a senior process technical resource, providing technical and operational expertise to address complex processes across business teams.
What you will do
Serve as the technical leader on the business team by mentoring less experienced engineers on design practices, unit health monitoring, and troubleshooting
Provide off-hours support of abnormal and non-routine operations, including unit Turnarounds
Aid in the development of long-term vision and strategy for product line improvements
Organize and design plant testing and product trials
Serve as a senior resource to set clear objectives and align priorities for the technical team
Influence others and drive toward solutions without direct authority
Work in a team environment with other engineering disciplines, operations, and mechanical personnel and interface with corporate technology support
Interface with 3rd party vendors for cost optimization and solution development
Serve as process safety resource on the business team leading Hazard and Operability Reviews (HAZOPs) and Risk Assessments, developing closure plans
Lead or support incident investigations as technical lead
Support development and implementation of capital projects to drive margin or mitigate SHE risk
Provide field assistance during plant startups, shutdowns or upsets
Demonstrate courage of conviction to drive healthy tension for fit-for-purpose outcomes
About you Skills and Qualifications
B.S. Chemical Engineering
10+ years of experience in Chemical Engineering plant roles with technical fuels/chemicals manufacturing
Preferred Qualifications/Experience
Process design experience
Familiarity with advanced control strategies/optimization software
Working knowledge of RBI practices (corrosion damage mechanisms/mitigations, etc.)
Risk assessment and HAZOP experience
Understanding of safety relief limits (modeling and evaluations)
Experience with modeling software (PROII, ASPEN, etc.)
Kinetic Modelling experience (SOL, KBC Profimatics, etc.)

The expected annual salary range for this position is $140,000 - $160,000. Individual pay determined by skills, abilities, qualifications, work experience and education.
