Position Summary Involves inspections of campus construction projects for conformance to project plans and specifications, applicable codes and standards, policies and procedures; quality control and assurance.
Responsibilities
Conduct inspections at regular intervals throughout the project lifecycle to confirm work complies with applicable codes, industry standards, campus design standards, and expected quality.
Provide expert inspection of buildings and related components, review and inspect campus utility connections, including high pressure steam lines, water mains, gas lines, sanitary/sewer and storm drains, duct banks, high voltage distribution, and voice/data/fiber optic systems.
Coordinate with campus utility engineering to review deviations from approved construction documents during installation of campus utility infrastructure.
Verify systems have been accepted prior to coverage by installing contractors.
Review building exterior access projects for ADA compliance in coordination with the campus Access Compliance Officer.
Identify barriers to access in existing facilities and ensure accessible elements meet applicable requirements in approved documents and codes.
Provide Inspector of Record (IOR) services on small and complex projects and coordinate activities of other inspectors and special inspectors as required by regulations.
Review special inspection reports for conformance and observe acceptance testing procedures where required.
Act as deputy to the Director of Inspection Services and Campus Building Official; provide guidance on code compliance paths and consider variances or alternative methods during project design and delivery.
Coordinate inspections with State/Campus Fire Marshal and, when possible, align inspection timeframes to minimize disruption to occupied spaces.
Document inspections in required systems with daily/weekly reports and project updates; maintain thorough project documentation.
Provide plan reviews for civil plans and specs and discuss findings with designers as required; collaborate with university engineering partners on civil reviews when necessary.
Required Qualifications
Expert knowledge of California Building Codes, Cal OSHA, and Campus Construction Design Standards.
Expert knowledge in providing comprehensive plan review services for complex improvement projects, with emphasis on code applications for replacements, repairs, and upgrades.
Strong ability to review, evaluate, and advise on project progress for payment applications.
Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills; ability to work with a variety of constituents.
Strong organizational and analytical skills with problem recognition, avoidance and resolution.
Ability to meet budget and time constraints; proficient with project documentation and digital photography of work in progress.
Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
Certification in a specialty inspection discipline or disciplines and certification in a specialty skilled trade.
Preferred Qualifications
ICC Commercial Combination Inspector (C5) or California Commercial Combination Inspector (I5).
Salary & Benefits For information on the comprehensive benefits package offered by the University, please visit the University of California's Compensation & Benefits website. The budgeted annual salary range is $112,400.00 - $145,000.00. This is an exempt monthly-paid position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.
