Overview

Structural Engineer – Hybrid In this position, you would serve an important role in the planning, analysis, design, and detailing of a diverse range of projects across the region. This role involves a diverse range of projects; the ideal candidate should possess a “can-do” attitude, excellent verbal and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently as well as with a team in a dynamic, fast-paced, and fun environment. The position includes opportunities for personal and professional development and growth within VHB’s New York/Long Island offices.

Responsibilities

Supports, develops, organizes, and implements structural planning, analysis, preliminary and final design document preparation for transportation related building structures

Project scoping and development

Mentors junior team members in the development of design plans, technical oversight, specifications, design calculations, load ratings, cost estimates, reports, final bid packages, etc. Provides technical oversight and review of structural designs.

Monitors project budgets and schedules

Assists with proposals and presentations

Skills & Abilities

Extensive knowledge of concepts, practices, and procedures in structural engineering

Strong technical skills with knowledge of various building structural systems and codes

Excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills

Excellence in verbal presentations and technical writing

Team oriented with the ability to work independently

Robust technical and critical thinking skills

Strong project management skills

Proactive and self-motivated, with excellent attention to detail and quality

Ability to lead and collaborate with a team of staff working remotely

Enthusiasm to learn, seek out opportunities, and take responsibility

Motivated to mentor junior staff

Strong organizational and time management skills

Proficiency in structural engineering and BIM software such as STAAD.pro, RISA 3D, PCA Design Software, RAM Steel, Tekla, MathCAD, Revit, Microstation, and AutoCAD

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering required; master’s degree preferred (may substitute for 1–2 years of experience)

5–8 years of structural engineering experience required

Licensed PE (Professional Engineer) required

Experience working on projects owned and operated by transit agencies such as MTA, Amtrak, and/or NJ Transit

OSHA 30 Construction certification preferred

Our best estimate of the salary range for this position located in Hauppauge, NY is $100,000-130,000. The final compensation will be based on a variety of factors such as individual qualifications, education, and experience.
