We are seeking an Associate Deputy Director for Science and Technology to work closely with the Laboratory’s Deputy Director for Science and Technology (DDST) and Laboratory senior management in formulating and carrying out activities to advance the Laboratory’s science, technology, and engineering foundations and to ensure cutting-edge scientific capabilities are available to support the Lab’s national security missions. The Office of the DDST is responsible for strategic support of LLNL’s scientific enterprise. In partnership with discipline and mission leaders, the Office prepares LLNL’s Science and Technology Investment Strategy; allocates more than $200M in annual internal investments; nurtures the Lab’s Core Competencies; oversees the Lab’s PostDoc program; and represents LLNL’s science and engineering enterprise and its research outcomes to external communities including NNSA, DOE, external review committees, university partners and other academic institutions, the private sector, and the broader scientific community. The Office leads research integrity and research security awareness and assurance efforts. The selected individual will actively lead, manage, and/or collaborate with senior Laboratory leaders on a diverse range of institutionally significant issues across all parts of the Laboratory and the broader DOE and NNSA enterprises. This position is a direct report to the DDST and serves in that role when needed. This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence with flexibility to work from home one or more days per week. You will

Represent and implement objectives and initiatives of the DDST Office, working with the DDST to determine strategic priorities and approaches to issues; develop integrated strategies and tactical approaches for major Office programs as required. Serve as LLNL Research Security Officer, enhancing awareness of research security; collaborate with researchers and leadership to mitigate risks, develop processes, assess performance, and improve lab security practices. Collaborate with and lead high-level institutional committees; advise on high-level decisions and prepare materials for decisions involving potential risks of audits or impacts on the Lab’s missions as a Federally Funded Research and Development Center (FFRDC). Work with LLNL senior leaders in high-level meetings to identify issues, decide on solutions, and enable policy determinations and resource allocations. Plan, organize, set goals, and execute initiatives for the DDST and the Director’s Office with knowledge of LLNL and stakeholder perspectives. Partner with the DDST Office team to ensure processes are in place to carry out programs and resolve issues. Provide leadership and technical oversight of the Laboratory’s Technical Evaluation Committee, ensuring activities comply with NNSA guidelines. Act on behalf of the DDST in internal and external activities involving Laboratory leadership and key partners. Collaborate with members of functional sub-groups of the National Laboratory Directors Council. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications

Active DOE Q-level clearance or active Top Secret clearance at time of hire. PhD in a scientific or technical field, or equivalent education and experience. Demonstrated excellence in science and technology delivery to support national security missions. Expert communication skills (listening, verbal, written) for complex topics and strategic influence. Strong leadership, partnering, and management skills for envisioning and enabling innovation and aligning with institutional priorities. Advanced problem-solving, decision-making, and leadership abilities to advise and develop solutions on diverse issues. Knowledge of LLNL, its science and technology, and stakeholders. Desirable Qualifications
