Principal Staff Software Engineer - Core Infrastructure. This role is based in Sunnyvale and follows a hybrid work model (home and LinkedIn office on select days as determined by the team’s needs). Role context

LinkedIn’s Core Infrastructure Engineering designs, builds, and operates foundational systems that enable LinkedIn’s products and services to scale reliably and efficiently. The role focuses on building and evolving distributed systems, defining architectural direction, and guiding opportunities across multiple platforms and teams to support a massive scale of data and traffic. Responsibilities

Build foundational systems that provide the core building blocks for LinkedIn’s products, tailored to handle massive scale and diverse workloads. Unblock large-scale projects with deep expertise in distributed systems, high-availability architecture, and performance optimization. Improve scalability, reliability, and developer productivity of the core infrastructure to meet critical business needs. Define architectural direction and technical roadmap for one or more core systems; make decisions on distributed design, data consistency, performance, and integration with existing infrastructure. Research and develop cutting-edge infrastructure technologies, exploring new paradigms and open-source solutions to drive innovation. Build and ship scalable software for foundational tasks, ensuring robust, efficient, and maintainable systems. Drive architectural decisions and provide clear guidance and technical vision across the engineering organization. Provide technical leadership to cross-functional teams and foster collaboration and shared ownership of key systems. Promote an inclusive culture that welcomes diverse viewpoints while navigating complex technical decisions. Partner with product engineering and other infrastructure teams to anticipate future needs and ensure systems scale. Define quality and efficiency standards for foundational software, balancing critical trade-offs. Lead by example to cultivate craftsmanship, operational excellence, and innovation within the infrastructure organization. Represent LinkedIn as an industry thought leader in relevant forums, conferences, and open-source communities. Basic Qualifications

BA/BS in Computer Science or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience. 15+ years of industry experience in design, development, and operation of large-scale distributed systems. Experience in distributed systems, networking, storage, or high-performance computing. Preferred Qualifications

MS or PhD in Computer Science, Distributed Systems, or a related field. 5+ years in a Principal Staff, Staff, or equivalent leadership role. Experience bringing large-scale foundational infrastructure to production for diverse customers. Strong technical reputation with thought leadership, including open-source contributions or conference talks. Deep expertise in areas such as consensus algorithms (e.g., Raft), distributed databases, kernel-level programming, or highly available key-value stores. Ability to set technical direction and drive alignment across teams; excellent communication and presentation skills. Benefits and Compensation

Pay range for this role is $218,000 to $357,000. Total compensation may include annual performance bonus, stock, benefits, and other incentive plans.
