About the Department:

The Mission of the Santa Barbara County District Attorney's Office is to pursue truth and justice by employing the highest ethical standards in vigorously prosecuting the guilty, protecting the innocent, and preventing crime.

The ideal candidate

for the position will have significant experience in criminal prosecutions that may include general felonies, specialized vertical units such as sexual assaults, major narcotics, gang prosecution, and homicides. This experience must include complex legal research and writing. In addition, the candidate will have experience working closely with criminal justice partners and will have good communication and relationship-building skills.

Responsibilities:

Representation and Active Participation in Diversion Programs:

Serve as the District Attorney’s representative in various diversion programs, including the Neighborhood Restorative Justice Program, CREDO-47, Misdemeanor Diversion Program, Mental Health Diversion, and other Collaborative Court programs. Fully engage in the development, implementation, and oversight of these diversion programs, ensuring alignment with program objectives and goals. Advocacy, Support, and Monitoring:

Participate in advocating for effective incentives and sanctions for program compliance or lack thereof. Monitor participant progress within diversion programs, defining parameters of behavior that allow continued participation. Working with Victims and Witnesses:

Collaborate closely with victims and witnesses of crime to ensure their voices are heard and their needs are addressed throughout the diversion process. Support, Mentorship, and Training:

Provide support, mentorship, and training to deputy district attorneys and staff related to diversion programs and initiatives. Community Outreach:

Engage in community outreach efforts to raise awareness of diversion programs and foster partnerships with community organizations. Collaborative Court Representation:

Represent the District Attorney’s Office in Collaborative Courts. Active Engagement in Collaborative Courts:

Participate fully as a collaborative court team member, committing to the program, mission, and goals.

Minimum Qualifications:

Active membership in the State Bar of California. Three years of experience as an attorney in the practice of public law or six years as a general practicing attorney;

OR , One year of experience performing duties equivalent to the class of Deputy District Attorney III with Santa Barbara County;

OR , A combination of training, education, and experience that is equivalent to one of the employment standards listed above.

Additional Qualifications:

Possession of a valid California Class C Driver's License may be required.

Knowledge of:

the organization, powers, and limitations of county governmental functions, civil and criminal codes, and the California Constitution; trial procedures and the rules of evidence.

Ability to:

appraise, interpret, and apply legal principles and precedents; present statements of fact, law, and argument clearly; prepare, present, and conduct trials effectively; perform legal research; work effectively with others.

Selection Process:
