Power Generation / Energy Utilities Job Summary
The Staff Engineer is the top-level position within the Power Generation engineering career track, functioning as a senior-to-technical expert. This role supports the clients Power Generation Operations Support Team and is primarily focused on the performance and maintenance of solid fuel combustion systems, especially for coal and biomass boilers. Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities & Experience 8+ years of relevant engineering experience (An Engineering PhD can be substituted for up to 5 years experience based on research engineering work on related projects approved by executive leadership.) Provide engineering support for the combustion of solid fuel, both coal and biomass, emphasizing all associated Air Pollution Control (APC) equipment. Engage fuel procurement team and provide technical guidance during fuel contract renewal. Review fuel contracts, ensuring certain fuel quality specifications are met for each of the solid fuel boilers in the fleet during contract negotiations. Negotiating and setting reject limits for critical constituents in the fuel for all future solid fuel contracts. Provide engineering guidance on which constituents in the fuel can have a positive or negative impact on all equipment associated will fuel handling, fuel delivery, boiler combustion, boiler cleaning, ash removal, waste disposal along with the impact the fuel constituents will have on the performance of associated APC equipment for the control of NOx, Acid Gases (SO2, SO3, HCl, etc), PM, and Hg. Provide engineering support on the sootblowing systems for the coal and biomass boilers in the fleet. Understanding the PJM dispatch cost calculations methodology to assist the Fuels, Energy Supply and Strategic Planning groups with their regulatory commitments. Provide engineering support for the current Wet FGDs, Dry Scrubbers, Hg Control systems in the fleet and be the SME if any Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI) systems are considered in the future. Engage with industry suppliers and manufacturers. Perform other duties as requested or assigned.
Education Requirements
Required Degree (equivalence not accepted in lieu of required degree): Bachelors in Engineering Required Engineering Criteria
Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an ABET accredited Engineering program based on the year that the Engineering program was accredited by ABET OR Possess a 4-year Engineering degree from an institution outside of the U.S. which is accredited through the country's own Engineering accrediting body under the Washington Accord as a full signatory, and is a degree that was recognized by the country's accrediting body on or after the date that full signatory status was achieved OR Possess a 4-year degree in Engineering (non-ABET accredited), Physics, Chemistry, Math or Engineering Technology and a post-graduate Engineering degree from an institution where the undergraduate degree in the same Engineering discipline is ABET-accredited based on the year the Engineering program was accredited by ABET OR Holds or has previously held a valid U.S. Professional Engineer license.
