Job Description
As part of the Branch Libraries Department, coordinates the daily operations of the Mahaffey Business Library, a branch of the Hesburgh Libraries, in support of teaching and research activities for the University. Ensures that the library is welcoming, well-organized, and efficiently serving faculty, students, and visitors. Provides expertise with circulation services, course reserve, and resource delivery services. Offers point-of-use instruction and addresses basic technology problems to facilitate the use of electronic products and services. Hires, trains, and coaches student assistants to provide circulation services. Coordinates the work of student assistants and staff members who substitute in the library.
This is a hands-on role that requires flexibility, problem-solving skills, and the ability to step in wherever needed to maintain smooth operations.
Key Responsibilities:
Library Operations
Open and/or close the Business Library following established procedures.
Ensure a safe, clean facility and report issues promptly.
Ensure study areas, computer stations, and common spaces are tidy and ready for use.
Student Worker Coordination
Supervise daily activities of student employees, including assigning tasks and monitoring attendance.
Coordinate and adjust student worker schedules to ensure coverage at service points.
Serve as backup staff for shifts when a student worker is unavailable.
Course Reserves & Circulation Services
Process requests for electronic and print course reserves, including intake, preparation, and shelving of materials.
Assist faculty and students with checking in and out of reserve items.
Answer user questions (faculty, staff, and students) and provide assistance; escalate complex issues to appropriate library staff or IT support as necessary.
Track and maintain accurate circulation records to ensure timely returns and availability of materials.
Technology & Facilities Support
Provide basic troubleshooting for library computer hardware and electronic resources, and escalate issues to IT staff when needed.
Work Environment
The position involves working at a circulation/service desk, moving materials, light lifting (up to 25 lbs), and periods of sitting, walking, and standing. Scheduling flexibility may be required. No weekends required.
Qualifications: Qualifications
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent required; some college coursework preferred.
Strong organizational and multitasking skills with attention to detail.
Demonstrated ability to manage and lead student workers.
Excellent communication skills with ability to answer, assist, and escalate user questions.
Familiarity with office software.
Preferred Qualifications
Some college coursework.
Prior library, academic support, or customer service experience.
