Rack and Stack Data Center Technician Job Duties: Racking: Assembling, mounting, and securing server nodes and other hardware (servers, networking equipment, storage devices, etc.) into server cabinets or racks. Cabling: Running, connecting, and managing cables (power, data, fiber) according to established standards to ensure proper airflow and accessibility. Stacking: Deploying and installing the assembled and cabled racks in the data center. Documentation: Maintaining accurate records of equipment placement, connections, configurations, and any changes made during the process. Testing: Performing initial checks and tests to verify that the hardware is functioning correctly and connected to the network properly. Rack and Stack Data Center Technician Key Skills To succeed as a rack and stack technician, you need a combination of technical knowledge and practical skills: Technical Skills: Proficiency in installing and maintaining various hardware components such as servers, switches, routers, and storage devices. Experience with Dell and VMware equipment highly preferred. Strong knowledge of data center operations and networking fundamentals (TCP/IP, VLANs, etc.). Familiarity with cable management systems and cabling standards like ANSI/TIA-942. Experience with testing and troubleshooting hardware and network issues. Understanding of data center power and cooling systems. Familiarity with server operating systems (Windows, Linux, etc.). Soft Skills: Physical stamina for lifting and handling equipment. Must be able to regularly lift up to 50 lbs. Strong attention to detail for precise installation and cabling. Good communication and documentation skills for recording and collaborating. Ability to work effectively within a team environment. Problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities.
