Vice President of Research
to join our leadership team, reporting directly to the Chief Technology Officer. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for defining and executing the research strategy that accelerates development of a novel single molecule proteome sequencing platform. Prior experience developing assays and instrument platforms in startups is desired. The ideal candidate will have a strong technical background in nucleic acid and protein biochemistry, and a proven record of leading multidisciplinary teams to tackle complex challenges and deliver innovative solutions. Responsibilities
Collaborate with the CTO and executive leadership to define and execute a translational R&D strategy to develop a complete sample-to-sequence workflow for a single molecule protein sequencing platform. Drive innovation in sample preparation, assay development, instrumentation, and data analysis to establish a robust, scalable, and competitive platform. Solve critical challenges in integrating cutting-edge science with product development, ensuring the transition from experimental proof-of-concept to a commercially viable process. Directly contribute to experimental work and troubleshoot technical challenges by maintaining hands-on involvement in the lab (approximately 25% of the time) Analyze experimental data, identify trends, and iterate on protocols to enhance accuracy and efficiency. Manage project timelines, milestones, and resource allocation to ensure deliverables are completed on-time and on-budget Foster professional development of scientists and engineers in a collaborative environment. Represent the company as a domain expert and thought leader at conferences, industry events, and meeting with investors, vendors, or academic partners Required Competencies
PhD in biochemistry, chemistry, biophysics, or related field 10+ years experience in people and project management, with increasing roles and responsibilities Comprehensive knowledge about nucleic acids biochemistry and bioconjugation Proficiency in lab methods, such as PCR, electrophoresis, cytometry, NGS library preparation, mass spectrometry, and nanopore sequencing. Experience with transferring manual assays onto engineering prototypes or commercial robotic platforms Experience in development of a commercial product, highly desired Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail. Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to document experiments clearly and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams. Experience in data analysis software Experience in statistical and DOE software Excellent interpersonal skills, capable of building strong relationships and communicating with stakeholders at all levels. Strong analytical, emotional, and social intelligence to navigate complex team dynamics and external partnerships. Willingness to operate with urgency, be resourceful, and maintain flexibility in an evolving environment. Compensation Estimated Base Salary $188K – $296K This is the pay range for this position that we reasonably expect to pay. Individual compensation is based on various factors including, experience, education, skillset, and geographic location. This range is for the SF Bay Area, California location and may be adjusted to the labor market in other geographic areas. Benefits and Perks
