Overview The Core Tax Services Senior Manager is responsible for advising clients on the tax implications of their business objections, evaluating and selecting alternative actions to lessen tax burden and cost of compliance, identifying different methods of complying with tax regulations while acting as the primary client contact for complex tax issues. In this role, the Senior Manager applies knowledge to understand potential tax issues, communicates potential risks and changes in tax policy, and makes top-level decisions regarding filing, preparation and resolution of questions from federal/state agencies. The Senior Manager is a critical member of the office/region leadership team and actively participates in marketing, networking and business development within an area of expertise, maintains client relationships, and serves as the primary contact for complex questions.

Ensures both that (a) clients comply with all applicable authorities, while minimizing tax and reporting burdens, and (b) self and client service teams comply with Firm policies, standards, and the BDO Tax Quality Manual ("TQM"). Conducts top level review of return/tax issues and resolves all tax issues with the client; involves specialists where appropriate Plans for early recognition of material tax and compliance issues and consults with the client and/or partner as appropriate

Research

Identifies when research is needed; clearly frames issues to be researched and reports the analysis Identifies complex issues to be researched by the engagement team and provides research methodology for efficient research process Trains managers/senior staff on research skills and helps to appropriately frame tax issues for analysis Involves firm specialists, as appropriate

ASC 740-10 (FAS 109 and FIN 48) Tax Accruals

Applies Firm policies, standards, and TQM regarding ASC 740-10 Reviews tax provisions and discusses components of the income tax provision and uncertain tax positions with the client Reviews prepared workpapers and helps others learn and apply ASC 740-10

Tax Consulting

Assists with developing, recommending, and implementing efficient methods to maximize client benefits, especially by decreasing current and future taxes Applies tax knowledge with business/industry understanding to recommend solutions Monitors implementation of client service plans to ensure efficient execution Manages inquiries from federal/state agencies and provides assistance with protests at the appeals level Implements applicable Firm strategies and manages client expectations

Tax Specialization

Develops in-depth understanding of technical issues in one or more taxation areas (e.g., individual, corporate, property, sales, state and local, international, transfer pricing, credits and incentives, etc.) May organize or participate in external CPE training sessions; may train and mentor staff in specialization areas

Strategy Development

Introduces and develops new ideas to improve client positions, reduce taxes or expenses, or provide non-tax benefits Researches and implements tax strategies, including evaluating new ideas Presents complex strategies to clients and prospects; may lead marketing campaigns if applicable

Other duties as required Supervisory Responsibilities Supervises associates and senior associates on all projects Reviews work prepared by associates and senior associates and provides review comments Trains associates and seniors on current software tools Acts as a Career Advisor to associates and senior associates Schedules and manages workload of associates and senior associates Provides verbal and written performance feedback to associates and senior associates Education Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities : Bachelor’s degree required; major in Accounting, Finance, Economics or Statistics preferred Master’s in Accountancy or Taxation preferred Experience Eight (8) or more years of prior relevant tax experience and/or public accounting, private industry accounting or consulting/professional services experience required Industry expertise in one or more tax specialty preferred Prior supervisory experience required License/Certifications CPA certification, Attorney (admitted to practice in a U.S. jurisdiction), or IRS Enrolled Agent (EA) required Other professional degrees or certifications applicable to the role preferred Software Proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite preferred Experience with tax research databases and tax compliance process software preferred Language N/A Other Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Superior verbal and written communication skills Ability to effectively delegate work Strong analytical, research and critical thinking skills Ability to work well in a team environment Capable of developing and managing a team of tax professionals Ability to compose written tax advice Capable of developing and maintaining client relationships Executive presence and ability to act as primary client contact for preparation and presentation of issues and resolutions All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability or protected veteran status.
