Overview Truman College’s Mathematics Center is seeking a part-time Tutor for Business. The Mathematics Center at Truman is a study space designed to help students thrive academically in mathematics, CIS, and business courses. A Tutor provides students with tutoring and instructional support in an academic or occupational area of study to help improve their academic capabilities and progress academically, while promoting independent learning and self-reliance.

Tutors assist tutees in developing and improving their competency in course work; and help students integrate and apply effective study skills, active reading and note-taking, test-taking strategies, and time management and organizational skills to their specific courses. Tutors work with students in various programs across the colleges, providing individual and small group tutoring in math, reading, writing, English, and other subject areas. Tutors also work inside the classroom as embedded tutors; tutor students in math and writing labs; and provide online tutoring services to students enrolled in distance learning courses. Performs related duties as required. For Fall 2025 semester, applicants with availability during the following window of time are most preferred: Mondays and Wednesdays, 12pm to 6pm. General Responsibilities
Provide academic assistance and tutoring to students on an individual basis. Tutor students to help them gain a deeper comprehension of course materials and a better understanding of work assignments to improve their academic success. Craft effective tutoring plans to address tutee’s weaknesses and strengths; motivate students and provide them with confidence to feel successful. Provide students with learning strategies including ways to improve study skills and retention, how to organize work, effective use of time, and how to build better study habits. Schedule individual tutoring sessions at a college’s Tutoring/Learning Resource/Academic Support Center, based on students’ requests for tutoring in a specific subject area, course or discipline. Assist the tutee in problem solving and applying critical thinking techniques in the context of a specific discipline or subject area. Help students develop positive attitudes and a high level of motivation towards learning and studying, build self-confidence and reduce anxiety or fear of failure in academic work. Tutor students and provide students with strategies to develop effective study habits and skills to improve academic capabilities. Prepare students for standardized testing and provide strategies to overcome test anxiety. Participate in tutor orientation and attend professional development and training sessions to increase competency in subject areas and improve tutoring skills. May conduct academic skill reviews and lead workshops on academic skills. Provide ongoing communication with students, instructors and academic advisors regarding academic progress of individual students. Maintain records on tutoring activities and provide periodic student assessments and evaluations as required. Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college or university in a field related to the subject(s) being tutored, or similar technical certifications and training. Specific additional requirements or certifications may be required depending on the assignment area. Bachelor’s or higher in Management, Accounting or other Business-related field. Completion of tutoring certification preferred. Experience in teaching, tutoring, or delivering academic support to students at the post-secondary instructional level is strongly preferred. Experience working in a large, urban community college environment with a diverse cultural and ethnic student body is highly desirable. Knowledgeable of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and proficiency in the subject area(s) to be tutored. Introductory level knowledge of Business Principles, Micro and Macro Economics, Managerial Accounting, Financial Accounting. Knowledge of effective tutoring techniques and strategies in subject area(s) and tutoring strategies used for improving students’ study skills. Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills. Initiative and willingness to take on responsibilities and job challenges. Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing work tasks. Dependability and reliability in fulfilling obligations. Technology savviness; capable user of technology who supports its efficient and effective use. Additional Information Salary Range: $17.48 - $24.59 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the respective collective bargaining agreement and applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities.
