ABOUT THE ROLE:
We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting and financial operations of our midsize real estate company. The Controller will oversee financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls across our portfolio of properties and development projects This is a hands-on leadership role that requires both technical expertise and the ability to partner with senior management to support strategic growth
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Direct all accounting operations, including general ledger, AP/AR, and property-level accounting Prepare and review monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements in accordance with GAAP Consolidate property financials into corporate reporting and ensure timely, accurate closes Develop annual budgets and forecasts; monitor results and provide variance analysis Oversee accounting for acquisitions, dispositions, development projects, tenant improvements, and lease accounting (ASC 842) Manage lender, investor, and partnership reporting requirements Implement and maintain internal controls, policies, and procedures to ensure compliance Coordinate external audits and tax filings Lead, mentor, and develop a team of property accountants and accounting staff Oversee accounting systems (Yardi, MRI, RealPage, or similar) and identify process improvements Support executive leadership with financial analysis to guide investment and operational decisions
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA strongly preferred At least 7+ years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 3 years in a leadership role Real estate industry experience (property management, development, or investment) required Strong technical knowledge of GAAP and real estate-specific accounting practices Proficiency with real estate accounting software (Yardi, MRI, RealPage, etc.) Exceptional organizational, analytical, and leadership skills
