Fahrenheit Advisors has been retained by our client, The Virginia Department of Health, in their search for a Controller to join their team in Richmond, VA.

Virginia Department of Health's Office of Financial Management is seeking an experienced finance leader to serve as Controller-a key role in overseeing financial operations, ensuring compliance, and driving best practices across the department.

Position Overview

The Controller reports directly to the Director of Financial Management and provides strategic leadership and oversight of the Office's administrative, operational, and financial functions. This role is responsible for ensuring compliance with GAAP, GAAS, and other applicable standards, while promoting efficiency, accuracy, and process improvements.

You'll manage critical functions including:

Data integrity Internal controls and risk management Audit preparation and compliance Financial reporting and analysis In addition, you will serve as Acting Director in the Director's absence, and represent the agency in financial matters to leadership, governing boards, and external auditors.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee financial operations including general accounting, accounts payable, payroll, and related functions Ensure compliance with state, federal, and agency financial laws, regulations, and reporting requirements Prepare, review, and present financial statements and disclosures in accordance with FASB or GASB standards Act as liaison to auditors, consultants, and other external stakeholders Identify opportunities for process improvements and implement best practices Provide leadership, coaching, and technical guidance to finance staff Minimum Qualifications

Extensive experience managing and overseeing financial processes in multiple functional areas (e.g., accounting, AP, payroll) Proven leadership and supervisory experience Strong track record of delivering financial presentations to boards, leadership teams, or governing bodies Experience preparing and/or reviewing annual financial reports in compliance with FASB or GASB standards Experience coordinating with auditors and managing audit processes Preferred Qualifications

Active Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license Experience and/or knowledge of Federal Grant processes Experience with, and/or knowledge of the Commonwealth of Virginia CAPP manual Why Join VDH?
