The primary purpose of the DON in planning, organizing, and directing the day-to-day functions of the Nursing department is to ensure that the highest degree of quality care is maintained at all times, as directed by the Administrator. Responsibilities
Will report to the Administrator Planning, developing, organizing, implementing policies and procedures in accordance with all governing rules Planning, developing, organizing, implementing the day-to-day functions of the nursing department in accordance with all governing rules Oversee nursing education
In-service training in the following areas for CNAs on a monthly basis: Catheter Care, Pericare, Infection Control, Oral care and hygiene, Oxygen Application, Safe transfers Return Demonstrations for CNAs: Pericare (orientation, quarterly, as needed); Catheter care (orientation, quarterly, as needed); Hand washing (orientation, quarterly, as needed) In-service training for Nurses on a quarterly basis: Infection Control, Oral care and hygiene, Oxygen Administration, Medication Pass and proper documentation, Mantoux Testing, General nursing issues Return Demonstrations for Nurses: Mantoux testing (semi-annually); Medication Pass (semi-annually) Ensure reference material at nursing station is current Make written/oral reports and recommendations to the Administrator Ensure all nursing personnel are following their job descriptions Develop, maintain, and implement QA program for the nursing department Coordinate nursing services portion of resident discharge plan

Chart Audits: Ensure Nurse Managers complete 72-hour admission chart audits Complete 72-hour admission chart audits in ADONs absence Ensure quarterly chart audits are complete and accurate Review discharge records Wound Prevention and Treatment
Ensure documentation is accurate and current Ensure comprehensive assessments and Braiden scales are up to date Ensure treatments are completed Lab Reports
Ensure physician is notified Ensure nurse notes and new orders are documented and followed PT/INR Reports
Ensure reports are logged and followed up on Other Documentation Monitoring
Infection/Isolation Change of condition Review nursing notes for accuracy Incident and accident reviews and prevention QA involvement State reporting coordination Policy updates Monitor documentation protocols Administrative Duties
Complete medical forms, reports, evaluations, studies, and charting Serve on committees (Infection Control, QA, Safety, etc.) Attend Care Plan meetings as needed Participate in weekend admin and supervisory on-call schedule Staffing & Personnel Management
Determine and maintain nursing staffing needs Recruit and select nursing personnel Ensure proper nurse/CNA coverage on all shifts Oversee staff scheduling Complete performance evaluations Make daily rounds Monitor absenteeism, tardiness, and overtime Administer fair disciplinary actions Resident Interaction
Participate in admission decisions Coordinate special resident needs with Admissions Director Greet new admissions Make rounds with doctors as needed Professional Development & Compliance
Attend continuing education programs and maintain licensure Ensure staff follow safety protocols Maintain clean, safe work areas Enforce departmental policies and dress codes Maintain adequate medication and supply stock Protect resident confidentiality Coordinate resident programs Any other duties assigned by the Administrator Job details
