Northrop Grumman Space Systems-Launch and Missile Defense Systems has an exciting career opportunity for a Principal Software Engineer (RA) to join our team of talented and diverse professionals. This role, based in Huntsville, AL, or Colorado Springs, CO., is crucial in supporting the U.S. President, the Secretary of Defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and operational levels.

This position does not offer relocation support and requires on-site work with no remote options.

Position Overview:

The Command and Control, Battle Management, and Communications (C2BMC) program is an essential part of the Missile Defense System. It provides a vital operational platform that allows the U.S. president, the secretary of defense, and combatant commanders at strategic, regional, and tactical levels to systematically plan missile defense operations, monitor battle progress, and actively control networked sensors and weapon systems to achieve global and regional mission objectives.

C2BMC offers a layered missile defense capability, delivering an optimized response to threats across all ranges and flight phases. It functions as a force multiplier by connecting, integrating, and synchronizing autonomous sensor and weapon systems and operations both worldwide and locally to improve overall performance. Additionally, C2BMC is a crucial element of all ground and flight tests that verify and demonstrate the missile defense system's current and future capabilities.

This position is for a Principal Software Engineer on the C2BMC program. The selected candidate will be responsible for software development in Java for a Regional Applications team in Huntsville (Battle Management, System-Arch, or Track Server). Working with minimal supervision, provides specialized expertise across multiple systems and software disciplines, as well as general knowledge of related fields, application implications, and customer areas. Responsible for conducting in-depth analysis and providing technical support for systems software products, including resolving complex problems, designing, developing, testing, integrating operationally, and supporting users.

Essential Functions:

Will handle currency updates, debugs, and configures related software products

Works from specifications to develop or modify operating system applications

Supports design, coding, benchmark testing, debugging, and documentation of programs

Collaborate with other system support groups to resolve issues, establish standards, and enhance the overall efficiency of the operating system

Designs, codes, tests, and implements tools for automation in operations

Will handle most phases of software systems programming applications and may need minor guidance in other phases

Basic Qualifications:

Please list your current security clearance and IAT or relevant certifications on your resume, if applicable.

Bachelor's Degree in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) discipline or a related field from an accredited university is preferred, along with 5 years of experience; or a Master's degree in a related field with 3 years of relevant work experience, or a PhD and 1 year of related experience; or 9 years of relevant work experience may be considered in lieu of a degree

Ability and willingness to travel up-to 10% to support business needs

Applicants must have a current, active in-scope DoD-issued

Secret

security clearance at the time of application, which is required to start

Candidates with an active DoD 8140 certification at

IAT Level II or higher

(e.g., Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) are strongly preferred at the time of application. If such certification is not held, it

must be obtained within 40 days of the start date

. The selected candidate will be responsible for securing and maintaining their DoD 8140 certification on their own personal time and at their own expense. Candidates who fail to obtain the required certification within 40 days will be evaluated for removal and subject to termination.

Software engineering and development experience with strong Java/J2EE skills or an alternative object-oriented development background

The candidate should understand software practices such as:

Coding standards

Automated testing

Automated build pipelines

Configuration management

Familiarity with widely used software development and management tools such as:

Maven

Git/GitHub

Nexus

Eclipse

Understanding

Agile

development methods

Understanding of key system engineering design artifacts like

Use Cases

and

SysML diagrams

Must possess excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, team environment

Strong problem-solving skills, including the ability to review performance and operational issues, identify root causes, and recommend, design, and implement solutions

Strong working knowledge of MS Office tools

Preferred Qualifications:

Current and active DoD 8140 certification at

IAT Level II or higher

(e.g., Security+, GSEC, SCNP, SSCP, CISSP, CISA, GSE, SCNA) at the time of application is highly preferred

Experience with

Agile

development methodologies

Experience developing enterprise applications on

Linux

(Windows experience also preferred)

Development of command-and-control system applications

Experience with software integration and formal testing

Knowledge and experience in implementing

Cyber Security/RMF requirements

Ability to present advanced concepts to non-software engineers, including senior program and military leaders

Experience with performance modeling

Experience with microservices

Experience with

DevSecOps

and/or build management

Willingness to take on unexpected tasks

Ability to work independently and demonstrate the poise and flexibility needed in a highly dynamic environment

Salary Range:

Colorado Springs, CO: $100,300.00 - $150,500.00

Huntsville, AL: $105,400.00 - $158,000.00

Primary Level Salary Range: $100,300.00 - $158,000.00

The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.

Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
