Performs a wide range of clinical Blood Bank laboratory testing in an accurate and timely fashion by utilizing technical and problem-solving skills in conjunction with a thorough knowledge of clinical laboratory principles. Maintains effective communications and transfers testing and pending follow-ups between employees and shifts following all CHAMP and HRO standards. Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Maintains operational effectiveness and assumes full responsibility for continuing education requirements, licensure, and expertise to adapt as needed to an expanding department with increased testing complexity. Responsibilities Understands and adheres to Performance Standards, Policies and Behaviors. Demonstrates knowledge and adheres to laboratory and hospital policies and procedures. Demonstrates technical competency by performing a wide variety of laboratory techniques, including moderate to highly complex tests. Demonstrates sufficient knowledge and skills to independently operate instrumentation and/or assigned benches. Operates all department equipment safely and according to manufacturer guidelines. Performs preventative maintenance and troubleshoots instrument failures. Performs tasks that assist with the overall operation of laboratory service according to laboratory policies and in compliance with regulatory guidelines. May assist with training new employees. Assist with specimen processing as needed. Assist with inventory management/control. Meet continuing education requirements. Participates in activities that demonstrate professionalism, a commitment to competency and career growth. Performs a variety of routine tests and procedures, performs instrument maintenance procedures, and performs routine quality control procedures. Performs other duties as assigned to assure efficient operations of the department, including covering other lab sections.

Qualifications

Education: BS Degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Biological Science or equivalent; ASCP eligible or equivalent. Experience: 0-2 years. Licensure: ASCP eligible. Special Skills: Excellent communication and customer service skills; Basic computer skills; Understanding of high complexity serological testing for antibody identification; Understanding of blood compatibility and components; Consistently interacts with coworkers and customers in a positive manner; Cooperatively and proactively assists in other areas as needed in a teamwork-oriented environment; Maintains procedure knowledge and implements all new and revised procedures in real time; Maintains all Quality Control and Quality Assurance standards at all times. Physical Demands: Regularly sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. Occasionally stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Visual requirements include near and far eyesight; color vision testing may be required. Accommodations available to perform testing accurately as determined on a case-by-case basis.
