What You'll Do:
Accurately codes/audits hospital based accounts utilizing appropriate coding manuals and/or encoder; adheres to official coding guidelines as published by the American Hospital Association and the American Medical Association, and to H.I.M. Standards of Conduct within the Coding Compliance Plan for coding, with the intent to promote quality documentation to support the appropriate use of codes for correct reimbursement. Coder will utilize appropriate code manuals and/or encoder to select accurate codes; demonstrates knowledge of current developments in coding field to maintain proficiency in job performance; communicates with medical staff as needed if questions regarding documentation arise that impact code assignment and clarification is needed; researches coding questions utilizing available online reference materials within the encoder and hardcopy reference manuals. Acts as a resource for business office personnel to answer questions regarding specific account issues or failed claims. Works cooperatively and in a timely manner with business office personnel to follow up on failed claims to assist with timely billing; enters diagnosis codes, procedure codes and other required data elements into computer system for billing and statistical reporting purposes; codes patient accounts in a timely manner - defined as within 5 days of discharge for all patient accounts (as long as needed documentation is on chart). Monitors accounts receivables by reviewing AR report on a daily basis and coding assigned delinquent accounts in a timely manner. Identifies problem accounts through reports and takes necessary steps to resolve the problems (i.e. no show patients that need to be cancelled or account numbers that need to be combined); notifies the Coding Manager when assistance is needed or questions arise as a result of a problem account. Performs a range of duties as part of Lead position, which includes but is not limited to, assisting with selection of new coders; assisting with onboarding and training of new coders; acts as initial point of escalation for help with problem accounts and/or clinician concerns/education assistance; escalating employee related concerns to the Coding Manager; conducts quality audits to ensure accuracy of coding for clinicians and compiles findings for reporting to the Coding Manager and/or HIM Director; escalates system related issues to HIM System Analyst as necessary; monitors and manages backlog appropriately; utilizes Epic reporting capabilities to assist with process improvement initiatives as well as daily monitoring needs; reviews failed claims and claim edits for correction and data trending; acts as a liaison with vendors as necessary; demonstrates professional behavior at all times; escalates concerns to Coding Manager and/or HIM Director. Maintains required licenses and/or certifications (Certified Coding Specialist, Registered Health Information Technician, etc.); achieves required competencies.
What You'll Bring
An example of acceptable experience and qualifications: Coding certification required, such as: Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or similar. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred in combination with coding certification, and at least two years coding experience in a health care setting or equivalent, with experience related to hospital/facility coding. Inpatient coding experience preferred. Demonstration of previous leadership experience preferred. Coding certification required, such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or similar. Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) preferred in combination with coding certification.
